Why Cowboys may still fire Wade

07:25 AM ET 12.24 | Do not be fooled by whatever Jerry Jones says about Wade Phillips' job status. In no way has Jerry made up his mind what he's going to do - no matter what he says. That's because he hasn't said the magic words, "Wade Phillips will be my coach in 2009." When he says that, then the discussion is over.

He's as good as gone, Jerry Jones will anounce that Hank Hill will takeover all coaching and GM duties in 2009 to the foreseeable future.

I think if they get another coach it will just put them back a few more years..... They should keep the guy instead of starting over....again...

December 24, 2008  07:45 AM ET

The discussion isn't over when he says that. Stupid journalists you never believe anything Jerry says...or any GM for that matter.

December 24, 2008  07:47 AM ET

Is this the only NFL thread they could come up with today? That's just sad.

Great Idea Hank! I did not know you were into self-torture! At least get a 5 year deal at 5 Mil each, take the buyout after you drive them further into the depths of the standings! Wade, pack it up Buddy!

I know I will get pummeled for this, but who would do a better job? Cowher is not going there. Holmgren is taking a year off, Garret could not get hired as the HC of any team in the NFL right now. And Jones will only take a proven successfull coach. Schottenheimer will be a GM.
He was hired because he is one of the best at running a 3-4 defense, and he has done a good job at that. I think he stays one more year....And they could still win it all...I just do not see any " magic bullet" out there....Sporano would have been the choice, he is gone......Who is big enough to take the job and put up with the circus that goes with the franchise?.. He stays by default..

you might be right, but with Jone's ego being the size of the new stadium or at least Rhode Island, all things points to Wade hitting the trail! Happy Trails to Wade, until you're hired again.............

Knowing Jerry, I wouldn't be surprised at all if he brought him back for the fans and their chances..

Jimmy Johnson will never coach the cowboys again ... too much water under the bridge between Jimmy and Jerry.

Yep. I've read plenty of columns from the guy who wrote this, and he isn't too accurate most of the time.

The Bottom line is when there is this much talent on one team and the dont win, its the Head Coaches fault. Its his job to prepare them and to keep them focused. This team embarrassed themselves and past Champion Cowboy teams on national tv this weekend. Michael Irvin always said he would never bring shame to the names in the ring of honor, and thus he was named "the play maker" and helped win 3 SB. I dont see anyone on this team willing to sacrifice like past Cowboy greats. And that alone is shameful.
Wade Phillips must go...and please dont hire Jason Garret.

I doubt the Vikings will set Johnson up with a Super Bowl rooster again. It would be just like his stint at Miami.
