Why Angels don't want Manny

He is the slugger who could elevate the Angels into a class with the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays, a difference-maker who could be acquired without giving up any top prospects, and the Angels have absolutely zero interest in him. General Manager Tony Reagins made that point perfectly clear Tuesday when, in the wake of the team's failed attempt to retain first baseman Mark Teixeira, he was asked if there was any chance of signing free-agent left fielder Manny Ramirez. "Manny will not be an Angel," Reagins said. "We're going to give our kids an opportunity to play. We signed [outfielder] Juan Rivera to a three-year deal, and we think, given at-bats, he can be a productive player. "With Torii Hunter, Vladimir Guerrero, Gary Matthews Jr. and Reggie Willits, our outfield is intact. It will not happen. We are not going to sign Manny Ramirez. End of story." If the Angels upgrade their offense, it will most likely come via trade. The plan for now is to go with 25-year-old switch-hitter Kendry Morales, a .249 hitter in 377 career big league at-bats, with 12 home runs and 45 runs batted in, at first base.

The Tex signing by the Yanks has dropped Manny's stock considerable. There are now only 2 teams who can/will pay for Manny and they are: Dodgers & Yankees. Presuming the Yankees are all set with Tex, that leaves 1 team. But then again, with the Yankees you can't presume anything.

Manny definitely carries the baggage or he wouldn't still be available. Looks like he may have screwed himself over this time.

You never hear Boras' name brought up in these stories about Manny. I guess Manny must have a clause in his contract that says he doesn't have to share the spotlight.

The back-lash of the Manny episode is outstanding.

Hopefully this will send a message to these overpaid athletes who consider themselves above the sport.

Hopefully management, as well as the fans, force these guys to remember who is paying them. I keep saying it but, for most athletes, you kind of wonder what they would be doing if they did not possess the unique skills and talents and they had the fans willing to pay the price for admission.

Maybe if we turned our backs on the sport...what would happen?

I would love it if he didnt get signed. But lets face it, he is going to go to the angels or dodgers for a 3 year contract. I'd be surprised if he went elsewhere...

And what would world renowned reseachers be doing if they didn't have that skill set? What would college professors be doing if they didn't have that skill set? Its a pointless question. Being able to hit a fastball or throw a ball better than 99% of society is their skill set. And to think turning your back on the sport would resolve anything may be short sighted. In majority of cities, if you didn't go, there would be 3 people lined up for your seat. The US is sports obessed so it creates a demand which can only be supplied by this small portion of athletes. If this wasn't the case, the sport would not be flush with cash and stadiums would be empty at any point a team raises the ticket prices.

It might be that Boras knows negative publicity when he sees it. The Manny saga may join some of his other recent failures and further tarnish his reputation for getting the most for his players.

Make sure my name is on all Teixeira and Burnett stories, but leave me off the Manny stories. Thanks, here's your regular payment.

real reasons the angels don't want manny:

1. Scott Boras
2. Manny has only shown production when he knows he is playing for a contract
3. they don't want to install a bathroom in the left field wall
4. Manny can't play left field and with vlad's knee's neither can he
5. it just doesn't fit

Boras actually may have made an error sending Tex to the bronx, Boston will not consider Manny, the Yanks still might, but had Tex gone to Boston the Yanks would be more willing to over spend for Manny. Now with the Halo's dropping out Manny's price dropped down from around 20 mil a year for 3 years to around 15 for a couple maybe 3 years (and thats still over paying for a guy who only plays when he feels like it).

Have to agree....too many times he has shown his true colors and lack of respect for anyone and lack of respect for the game...word is out Manny (finally)-- YOU'RE A BUM!

December 24, 2008  10:28 AM ET

Hahaha, it looks like Manny is screwed. The Yankees are already walking a fine line and signing Manny might be the last straw that would result in severe new luxury taxes. It looks like the Dodgers made the smart move withdrawing that $45 million, two year offer, they may end up getting him for three years at that price. But then, who wants to sign a sullen Manny? If he thinks he got screwed he will likely be nothing but a pain in the rump.

December 24, 2008  10:37 AM ET

The Yankees are going to trade for a center fielder and then they are finished. They have no place for Manny on the roster.

December 24, 2008  10:49 AM ET

Muck Fanny.... there I said it.

December 24, 2008  11:42 AM ET

man, here's another season down the drain.

Yes Muck Fanny is right. But, I honestly don't think that the yankees are done. I agree with you CardsFan2, I think that they are going to trade possibly Matsui and some out of the farm for a center fielder. Damon is a good leadoff so i dont think hes going unless they have someone who can take over his leadoff spot. Do't count the yankees out, they may end up surprising us all and make moves so that they can sign him.

Spell Check: Don't

Your second point is absurd. Did you conveniently forget the first 7 years of Manny's stay in Boston? He produced at a HoF level when he clearly wasn't playing for a contract. It's also not possible to hit over 500 HRs by "only playing when he feels like it".

My fellow Red Sox fans are so bitter and petty. It's really embarrassing.

Simple fact: Despite this being a team game, our Red Sox would now be at 91 years without a title if we had never signed Manny.

The Yankees would be stupid not to hire him with what he can do in October (the time of year when ARod and Tex turn into scared little girls). What's another $20M a year, at over $200M if the Yankees do not win the World Series this year, they will be an utter and complete laughingstock, a tribute to all that is wrong with sports.

Very true words. Manny may have been drama last year, but he was a HUGE reason the Sox were able to put together a championship run in '04 (where Manny was the MVP) and '07. Somebody will hire him, he'll hit 40 HR and be great in the clutch. THAT is Manny being Manny.

(sorry the 2nd part of my rant got put in Rikj's quote).
