USC safety Mays considering pro options

This could be it for Taylor Mays. USC's Rose Bowl game against Penn State on New Year's Day might be the junior safety's final game for the Trojans. Mays acknowledges it. Teammates believe he may have no choice. Even Coach Pete Carroll, describing Mays' talent and work ethic, sounds as if he's preparing for the consensus All-American's early departure to the NFL. "He's like a pro," Carroll says. But will he soon become one?

Make the wise choice........... good luck.

be careful Mays...the lions have 2 first round draft picks this year

December 25, 2008  04:05 PM ET

all of us out in l.a. know this kid has conducted himself with class and respect not always found in blue-chippers, but was jsut biding his time to make himself eligible for the draft. with a 6'4" 235 pound frame and running a ridiculous true timed 4.4 he would risk too much not to go so, i wish you well taylor and good luck int he rose bowl!

Enter the draft so the Saints can work some draft day magic and get you to replace that God awful Roman Harper

Mays has been great to us for the last 3 years... And I normally wan't kids to stay as long as they can... But in his case... It is definitely time to head to the NFL... He will be a Pro Bowler inside of 4 years... He can do everything... I just hope the Lions don't take him... Talk about going from Heaven... To hell

Dude stick around. Have 1 more year of fun before you get into the bs and politics of pro fb.

December 26, 2008  04:24 AM ET

So now all 11 Trojan starters are going in the first round? This must be a record.

December 26, 2008  12:32 PM ET

LOL... Good one Sandy... I think we will only have 3... 4 at the most... Go in the first round... And our overall draft should be really good.... Again

December 26, 2008  12:52 PM ET

He is definitely NFL ready. I hope that he can escape the lions

December 27, 2008  04:45 PM ET

Let's see, Lendale White is the leading rushing scorer in the NFL and a starter for the best team in football and 2009 Super Bowl Champions, Reggie Bush was tied with Lendale for leading rushing scorers before he went out with a season ending injury. Steve Smith won a Super Bowl as a starting receiver for the 2008 Super Bowl Champion Giants. Matt Cassel is the starting QB of a supposed dynasty called the New England Patriots. Palmer signed the most expensive NFL contract extension of all time a couple years ago, so he must be kinda good. Troy Polamalu won a Super Bowl with the Steelers a couple years ago and has been an NFL defensive superstar his whole career, as has Junior Seau (is HE still playing?).

Basically the USC Trojan's run the NFL.

I fixed that for you. Mays HAS to go pro because he'll be the first safety taken in the draft. His freakish combination of size, speed, ferocity, and experience make him the 2nd coming of Sean Taylor (R.I.P.). During the Rose Bowl I heard Herbstreit say he was clocked in the sub-4.3 range. I don't know how accurate that is, but it's been documented that he is the fastest player on USC's roster. Mays could be the best NFL safety prospect that USC has produced, which is hefty praise considering the safeties that have gone through Heritage Hall (Ronnie Lott, Mark Carrier, Sammy Knight, Troy Polamalu). Does anyone know what has happened to Darnell Bing? He was supposed to be a can't-miss prospect too?
