Senior Nate Longshore was named Cal's starting quarterback for Saturday's Emerald Bowl against Miami, coach Jeff Tedford said Thursday, ending a run of three starts for sophomore Kevin Riley. Tedford said Riley will be competing with redshirt freshman Brock Mansion to regain the starting gig next year.

Like Mandel wrote in a column a few days back, the Emerald Bowl offers some intriguing matchups. As he pointed out, they've had some pretty cool pairings in this bowl recently. Florida State Vs. UCLA, and now, Miami Vs. Cal. I'd rather be in a more prestigious Bowl, but really, when else do you get to see matchups like these. The Emerald is becoming one of the better "Mid-tier" Bowls, IMO.

That said, I'm going to have to show some East Coast love and say the Canes win by a TD.

starting longshore over riley might feel like the right thing to do for the senior ,but in the long run starting riley is a better play going forward.
