Economy affecting Cardinals' offers

Initially bullish entering the offseason that they could see "even a growth in payroll," as team President Bill DeWitt III said, the Cardinals have had to recalibrate their financial expectations for the coming season. For the first time in years, they are preparing estimates that include drawing fewer than 3 million fans, DeWitt confirmed. The Cardinals reached 3.4 million in 2008, originally set their 2009 budget on a target of 3.2 million in ticket sales, and are now planning for other possibilities. Ticket renewals have been good, DeWitt said, and the team is somewhat insulated by the All-Star Game coming to St. Louis in 2009. But the chill in the economy at large has forced them to be -- and here's another buzzword -- "conservative" and prepare for a spectrum of possible budgets. Some would influence the on-field payroll.

The Cardinals have become cheap in the last few years. They should have made an offer to the Padres to get Peavy, but didn't. This is why. They have good young talent, but are shying away from veterans other than Pujols and Molina.

Stop making excuses ! "Conservative" isn't going to bring more fans into the park. 3.4 mil is more than the Cubs drew last year. I want the Cards to be competitive. If Cards management really believes that they need to sit tight for the immediate future, they shouldn't broadcast it, that does nothing but make some fans stay away.

boring

I think the Cards have some money to spend. I think they're just being cheap.

December 26, 2008  12:19 PM ET

here is a novel idea, if you are expecting less fans lower ticket prices in the sections you do not expect to fill. then more fans will purchase tickets and THEN they will spend money on $10 beers and $6 hot dogs, wow, what a concept THINKING.

The economy is effecting everyone, and most teams. I had plans to see the Tigers next season, but now they are raising tix prices after coming in dead last. Forget it. I'll spend my money at the Minor League parks and my kids and I will have a lot more fun.

what happened to the Cards lately?

Help is on the way.

I guess this team is just going to concede and move right out of the way of the Cubs, who are basically the Red Sox of the National League.(Minus the championships of course. LOL)

Don't worry any team can have a bad century.

My opinion........ when current ownership bought the team from the Brewery 13 years ago, they were very gung ho, and always went out and spent the money and made deals for the players the Cards needed to contend.....Andy Benes, Todd Stottlemyre, Edgar Renteria, Jim Edmonds,Scott Rolen, Larry Walker, Chuck Finley....etc, etc. All players that were fairly big names but that contributed to the success and playoff runs. Then...they got their championship, and they have changed their approach since then. Since winning the WS, their big off-season acquisitions have been players like Kip Wells, Adam Kennedy and Cesar Izturis. They did acquire Khalil Greene this offseason, but the approach has been more than conservative all along this winter. I think they got their title.....they still draw like crazy.....and so they are content.

I agree with budman.....what's the point of even stating this publicly? It's just going to alienate fans.

I agree totally. I like to think that it is part of a bigger plan, to demonstrate fiscal responsibility, enhance the farm system, and plug in a free agent every so often when needed. But not signing a 9th-inning reliever this off-season has bothered me, and not sending a couple of young hitters to San Diego for Peavy bothers me more. This team has some really good, young talent, and they may still make a couple of deals, but it seems that money is the predominant concern right now. We definitely don't want the Cards to become the Pirates.

This is all about ''damage control" - the Cardinals are **** like the rest of baseball they just didn't pull the trigger on anyone - YET !!!

December 27, 2008  11:22 AM ET

Bill "DeWallet" has always had issues with spending on top tier talent but in the past he had Walt Jockety to still make the team competitiveby sifting through the scrap heap, Mozelak hasn't quite made the grade yet though the Glaus pickup was nice.

Although I agree that the Cardinals should have pulled the trigger on the Peavy trade, I don't think it's fair or accurate to call them cheap. Not only did they trade for Khalil Greene (a shortstop who makes more than $6 million a season) in the offseason, but people forget that they also signed Kyle Lohse to a sizeable extension in the offseason. That may not be equal to the wheeling and dealing the Yankees or Mets have done. But who else has spent that much in the offseason?

December 29, 2008  12:01 PM ET

I am afraid the Cards are going to do nothing else. They still need bullpen help and a starter, and it sound like Fuentes isn't going to happen.

Any way to lure Walt Jocketty back from the Reds? Mozelniak and the rest of the Cardinals management are slowly tanking this proud organization. If we had gone after second tier closers like Huston Street, Kevin Gregg, etc. we could have gotten one right away for a "decent" price. Instead the knuckleheads concentrated on guys like Fuentes and made things worse by refusing to give anybody a 3 year deal.........who cares nowadays on a 2 year deal vs. a 3 year deal? I'm glad we didn't try to keep Felipe Lopez and/or Aaron Miles (both of whom are perfect Tony Larussa role type players) or pitchers like Braden Looper (who would at least give you 8-9 wins and eat up a bunch of innings for your staff). With one quality closer and one more quality starting pitcher we could be a serious threat! Instead we are hell bent on trying to get Isringhausen his 300th save in a Cardinal uniform and being "conservative" altogether..........all this in a year in which we are hosting the beloved All-Star Game. I guess management is okay with the Cardinals slowly becoming the Pirates? Seems so.
