Williams frustrated over limited Cowboys role

Dallas Cowboys receiver Roy Williams tried like the dickens to just shut his mouth and bite his tongue. Asked about his limited production and how he has been used since coming to Dallas nine games ago, Williams initially sat silent and smiled. When pressed further he said, "Merry Christmas. "Merry Christmas to everybody." But it was only a matter of time before the floodgates of frustration would open, forcing him to acknowledge that this experience in Dallas since the Oct. 14 bye week trade from the Detroit Lions has not been everything he expected. Williams was acquired by the Cowboys to help unleash their struggling offense and take double teams away from receiver Terrell Owens. The Cowboys traded first-, third- and sixth-round draft picks in 2009 to the Lions and gave him a five-year, $45 million contract to also be the go-to guy of the future. But he has had minimal impact, catching just 17 passes for 194 yards and one touchdown. Williams says simply that "it's been a struggle. "I am just being patient," he said. "I am just patiently waiting. I am just hanging in there." Cowboys coach Wade Phillips blames part of Williams' struggles on a plantar fascia injury he has been laboring with the past three weeks. Phillips also said that quarterback Tony Romo, offensive coordinator Jason Garrett and Williams are still trying to figure things out, considering he came at midseason and that Romo was sidelined with a finger injury the first three games. Williams said the injury is not a problem nor is his ability to get open. "People can watch the film," Williams said when asked if he was struggling to get open. "I'm doing what I am coached to do." Williams has an understanding ally in Terrell Owens. Normally complaining about not enough passes thrown his way, Owens said Williams has a legitimate argument and has a reason to be frustrated.

Give it time Roy. Maybe not this year. Get a full off season under your belt and then we'll see you're potential. For now, just help out where you can.

December 26, 2008  08:00 AM ET

This guy will be a bust in Dallas just like he was in Detroit and it's going to cost the Cowboys big time with all of the draft choices they gave away. If Detroit gets real front office guys who know how to draft and a good head coach, this team will have some potential stars on this team.Maybe the next Hershel Walker type trade.

OMG, why do reporters and TO keep doing this chit on the eve of such important games!!

SHUT UP!!!!!!!!!! SHUT UP!!!!!!!!!!SHUT UP!!!!!!!

You will have 5 months to complain, NOT NOW!!!!

December 26, 2008  08:31 AM ET

Roy was never a bust in Detroit!!! He is a consistant 8 TD and 1000yd WR. But he isnt getting the ball enough with TO and Witten. Maybe when TO is gone the stats will improve.

December 26, 2008  08:34 AM ET

I wouldn't say the dude is a bust... he is just finding it hard to get a lot of touches on a team with Barber, Owens and Witten. He should shut his trap because he is sounding like an Owens wannabe... Wasn't he rescued from a pathetic franchise and brought to a team knocking on the playoff door?

He should be saying "I don't care what I have to do.. block, be a decoy, bring lunch in for Coach Phillips, I am happy to be playing football that matters after several seasons in football hell". NOw, he just sounds like every other selfish, pathetic stat-mad player who will never learn what it takes to win in the NFL.

I know, I just get so tired of all the whining days before such important games.

Although, if the Raiders fly across country and choke by 3pm, I can't say this game will have much drama. But the other part of me thinks that the Eagles would like nothing more than to knock my Boys outta the playoffs.

Either way, should be good

December 26, 2008  09:27 AM ET

now all the Boys need is for Keyshawn johnson to come play for them. squeaky wheel gets the ball.

Doesn't TO squeak enough?

All Roy Williams has to do is catch the balls that are thrown to him and more will come once people relise he is good.
I have watched the Lions games the last few years because my Fox channel is out of Detroit and was shocked what a head case Williams can be. He had it in his head his QB's sucked and he would not try for them. He would get balls right in the bread basket and he would drop them , get up and walk away laughing.
That is one of the reasons why Detroit QBs stopped throwing to him and threw to people like Mike Flurrey. They cared and wanted to be there.

December 26, 2008  10:39 AM ET

WORST TRADE EVER.

December 26, 2008  10:41 AM ET

So, exactly just how dumb is Garrett? If you cannot figure out a guys role after NINE weeks, then when does it happen? Why would eight weeks next summer make a difference? He is not some rookie who never played before.
Being a Giant fan, it is fine by me, but no way is he better than Crayton in that offense. The pieces have to fit, compliment one another. Not sure he does that..If he is so wide open, then that is saying Romo is not a very good QB at making decisions....Someone is at fault, and Williams has made it clear it is not him.

December 26, 2008  01:18 PM ET

Another player crying? Like I said in my previous post! The circus in Dallas is much more entertaining to watch than the game they play!

December 26, 2008  01:56 PM ET

Exactly ... you have months in the offseason to complain ... shutup and run your route.
