Favre hinting at retirement

Four days away from the biggest game of the season, Brett Favre sounded nostalgic, beaten up -- hinting at a possible shoulder injury-- tired and almost resigned to the fact the Jets blew their shot at the playoffs. If the end for Favre isn't Sunday against the Miami Dolphins at Giants Stadium, it may be soon thereafter. Favre said he'll meet with general manager Mike Tannenbaum and coach Eric Mangini soon after the season because he doesn't want things to drag on and get ugly, as they did last season in Green Bay. Favre talked about how he has had a great career and he's not going to chase ghosts, meaning another shot at the Super Bowl. And, Favre dropped a bombshell, revealing that his shoulder doesn't feel quite right and he's looking forward to his exit physical and an MRI to find out if there's any damage. Though Favre said it's premature to talk about retirement, he sounded as if he can't wait to get back to his hometown of Hattiesburg, Miss., and go hunting. But first, the Jets (9-6) meet the Dolphins (10-5) on Sunday in an AFC East clash with playoff implications for both teams.

Dear God...here we go again. Maybe Joey Porter will hit him so hard that the decision won't be favre's and we can all be spared this nonsense/

December 26, 2008  07:19 AM ET

i hope favre comes back for another season. if his shoulder isnt really damaged, i can see him coming back, he's simply not ready to hang em up and he's far from the worst QB playing this year and wont be the worst QB playing next year either

December 26, 2008  07:53 AM ET

Just giving himslef an out if he loses against Miami.

December 26, 2008  07:58 AM ET

yeah ... right ... this is gonna' happen .... NOT

December 26, 2008  08:13 AM ET

He's going to say he's retiring, lead the Jets on all through the off season, find another team to sign with and the Jets will end up starting Aaron Rodgers. Huh?

December 26, 2008  08:20 AM ET

Brett, Now is not the time for this bull sh**! You have 1 more game to play. Being a Pats fan, I find it extremly difficult to root for the Jets, but this weekend I'm praying for a Jets win over the Fish. (of course you know why) So bring your "A" game this week Brett, and wait till next week to start crying over your shoulder and all the retirement crap. BEAT THE DOLPHINS!!!

December 26, 2008  08:23 AM ET

Selfish! Seems like Ive heard this story before talking retirement and me me me instead of the team. LEts face it the season is long and when your 39 40 years old you dont want to play in the cold anymore or at all. Let your ego go and realize there that Payton manning is going to break all of your records except INTS

December 26, 2008  08:26 AM ET

Heard it all before... cant trust a word of this guy...

December 26, 2008  08:44 AM ET

I really don't care about this story. As Herm once said..."same ol' Jets"

He doesn't sound real motivated to play never mind beat the Dolphins. Hate to see the Pats go 11-5 and miss the playoffs.

"Premature to talk about retirement"!?!?!?!

Yeah, if he had a time machine.

December 26, 2008  09:04 AM ET

He used to be one of my favorite players. Now he's just annoying. This gets so old every year.

Why can't this jerk just keep mouth shut until after the season. Must be a product of the great education he received at So. Miss.
