The effort to recruit Jamarkus McFarland took a turn at precisely 12:01 a.m. on Christmas, when McFarland, 18, decided to commit to Oklahoma. On Thursday, he called the Sooners' defensive line coach, Jackie Shipp. "I want you to coach me for the next four years," McFarland told him. "What did you say," Shipp said. "I want you to coach me for the next four years," McFarland repeated. "Isn't that what you wanted for Christmas?" Shipp told McFarland to hold on, then he began screaming. McFarland's decision ended a grueling recruiting process, although he cannot sign a letter of intent with the Sooners until Feb. 4. Coaches from Oklahoma and Texas are not allowed to comment on McFarland until then.McFarland's mother, Kashemeyia Adams, said she received numerous offers, including one for an interest-free loan for a former classmate, if her son were to choose Texas. She said she did not believe the offers were affiliated with the Texas football staff. Along the way, McFarland was wined and dined. He visited the house of the president of Oklahoma, where he was promised a spot in the prestigious President's Leadership Class. He rode in a Hummer stretch limousine in Los Angeles. He attended parties, including one in Dallas, where he said there was free alcohol, drugs and young women taking off their clothes. In the end, his decision came down to trusting his mother and his grandmother, Bobbie Jean Adams. At the start, Kashemeyia Adams was unimpressed with Oklahoma. As she and her son wrapped up a visit to its campus in April, she departed with terse words for Shipp. "I am never setting foot in Norman, Oklahoma, again," she recalled telling him. "I didn't like it. I'm not going to deal with it." Adams initially favored Texas because of its prestige and because of what she perceived as its stronger academic offerings. But Shipp delivered on his promise. He sent her e-mail messages every day, building the foundation for what would become a friendship. When Adams did not reply, Shipp sent follow-up messages. In one, he wrote, "Ms. Adams, Haven't heard from you in a few days." She liked his persistence, his no-nonsense attitude and the idea that he could be a black male role model for her son. Adams, meanwhile, received only occasional letters and e-mail messages from Texas coaches. "Texas went to sleep in the summertime in recruiting J-Mac," she said. "When they went to sleep, Oklahoma woke up."

Is an investigation ongoing to the illegal shenanigans of these "unnamed" schools?! Go OU in BCS! Boomer Sooner

December 26, 2008  08:08 AM ET

I am an OU fan but until this kid is on campus,I won't count him as a commit. There are way to many signs pointing to a decommit with this one

December 26, 2008  09:22 AM ET

this article is kind of like a poorly edited kung fu flick (watched shaw brothers marathon last night).

a classmate from texas offering to pay an interest free loan, but the mom thinks he wasn't part of UT staff...then the kid is being wined and dined in hummers in LA, then off to free booze and narcotics in Dallas...then mom says she will never step foot in norman, and now the kid commits to OU?

I guess that show House is right....everybody lies. Remember that Shipp.......EVERYBODY lies.

Another exclamation point letting UT know it is a second rate progrtam compared to OU. Enough with all this 45-35 nonsense, all that matters is 7 to 4, with a real chance of 8 to 4.

wow, are you serious? you do realize BARRY SWITZER used to coach for you right?

anyway it doesn't matter, you're going to get bent over next month so I guess you have to take your weak pot shots while you can.

"Texas went to sleep in the summertime in recruiting J-Mac," she said. "When they went to sleep, Oklahoma woke up."

Mom doesn't sound like a concerned parent trying to guide her son. She sounds like a slimey sports agent trying to sell a product.

well too bad for you losing to a "2nd rate" program 3 of the last 4 years! if you're going to try to insult Texas you may as well at least try. I can't wait to watch all your crying fans when poor little bob stoops goes 0 for his last 5 in the BCS while that 2nd rate program makes it 3 in a row in their BCS games. Oh well, at least you have Billy Sims to keep spirits up. He probably won't even realize you lost.

I am with EyesWideOpen on this one... Reading this story... The mom sounds like the mom in the movie Blue Chips... Hopefully this kid has more brains... Than his mom does... Sounds like she has been waiting for this moment... And the next step after that... For years

Anyone who has closely followed recruiting knows that none of this is NEW. The NCAA isn't going to do crap about this. It can't even do anything about Reggie Bush or OJ MAYO and there's actual evidence there. The mother is naive and severely IGNORANT to think her kid with an OU degree will be looked upon favorably in Texas. Good luck with that.

What I really want to know and what the article doesn't really explain, is why he dropped USC when that was the only school he wanted to verbal to after visiting. YEah, I know his momma didn't want him to thing will be handed to him, but that's pretty much what every school was doing. OU was going to hand him a spot on some so called education committee. Did his momma really think he deserved that?

If one wants to bring up ancient history remember Mack Brown was on the coaching staff at OU under Barry Switzer.

Speaking of ignorant, degrees from other Big 12 schools (i.e. OU, TTU, A&M etc.) are just as marketable in Texas as a degree from Austin. Once you get into the real world college football and its connection to a particular school is a hobby that brings nothing to the bottom line of a company, unless you are in sports entertainment. I worked at a very large law firm in Dallas that hired based on their client needs not on the brand label pedigree of an institution, i.e. a large segment of their clients were in the oil and gas industry so they hired OU law grads due to its outstanding petroleum engineering and mineral rights law programs, they also hired extensively from TTU law school, they did not hire solely from Austin.

Some other facts:

In July 2006 an article in the Wall Street Journal and Financial Times listed public universities that they believed were the unviersities of the future based on their academics. OU and University of Florida were listed and wrote about, Austin nor any PAC 10 schools were even mentioned.

Do not confuse football on the field with academics in the classroom. Unfortunately they are not related. For every serious student athlete like Sam Bradford (3.95 GPA finance major), Jordan Shipley (pre-med major ready to enroll in graduate school) and Myron Rolle (pre-med Rhodes Scholar), you have the majority of athletes majoring in useless degrees like sociology, community service or general studies with the sole intent of playing professional football not getting an education. Athletes who are unprepared for the real world if they do not make it to the NFL. That is partly their fault, the institutions fault and the fans fault becuase all they want ,relating to the student athlete is to win. Last month USATODAY had an interesting article on a wrestler from the University of Minnesota who received a nursing degree. he relates how as a student athlete the staff and his team mates tried to persuade him to major in something that required less studiyng and more devtion to his psort. he didn't listen. After he graduated he received a job immediatelt. His team mates who took the easy route. Unemployed or going back to scholl for a worthwhile degree.

easy there fan boy. My remarks didn't say that an OU degree was worthless, just that it might end up being a problem for him since he's a big time TX recruit who spurned his home state school for a not well liked rival. It might end up affecting HIM is the point. So get your panties out of your crack and relax.
