An ailing Perth Amboy teen got his Christmas wish a little early this year with a visit from Yankees' captain Derek Jeter. Fourteen-year-old Richard Guillen has a form of bone cancer called ostersacoma. He was diagnosed earlier this year. The Make-a-Wish Foundation of New Jersey arranged for Guillen to take a limo to the Marriot Marquis Hotel in Manhattan to meet Jeter. When he got there, Jeter made him an honorary member of Jeter's Leaders, a youth group promoting academic performance and community responsibility. Guillen says it was a dream come true. His mother says her son gets paralyzed with excitement can't always find words. However, the big smile on his face spoke plenty.

Derek Jeter=Class act

December 26, 2008  08:41 AM ET

so should we expect that he promised the kid that he'd hit 2 opposite field singles and make a throw from shortstop that takes 2 weeks to get to firstbase?

December 26, 2008  09:12 AM ET

Why so negative. The guy does something nice and people still jump on him. I don't care where the athlete plays, when they do things like this it's great.

December 26, 2008  09:31 AM ET

Jeter truly is a class act. But despite his numerous examples of giving back to the community, some **** bags will always find a way to criticize him or his extraordinary efforts.

Class move by a class guy.
A Red Rox fan.

You are a very angry clown. You should think about a career change.

no no no. C'mon, you don't think its funny how fast the Jeter apologists came storming out like the germans through poland??

Jeter promised the kid he would get the Yanks to sign Paul O'Neill back for one day only and in that day O'Neill is going to hit 2 homeruns and catch a flyball in his hat.

in a unrelated story Jeter is seen face shoving and throat punching unsick kids as they ask him for an autograph outside the marriot

Another Red Sox agrees with you a hundred percent on this one.

A nice feel good story......Kudos to you Jeter.

Now we can all rest easy. Perhaps Red Sox Nation can hold hands with the Evil Empire and sing a round of Kumbaya.

Seems like this should be happening about once a week with all the top players. Too bad it isn't. Kudos to Jeter though for doing it at all.

December 26, 2008  01:01 PM ET

No matter how you feel about the Yanks, Jeter has always been a classy individual. I'd rather see stories like this than crap on Clemens and Bonds.

December 26, 2008  03:40 PM ET

I wish that the media would spend more time focusing on athletes that do some amazing charity work rather than their $15,000 tabs at Pure in Las Vegas, or whatever 50 something celebrity they are shacking up with.

I'd rather read about Jeter making a kid smile than A-Rod banging or not banging, Madonna.
