Jerry talking as if Wade will return

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones acts like a man who wants Wade Phillips to succeed Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles. In Jones' mind, Phillips can help the Cowboys win "for the next several years." Jones indicated Friday that he wants to keep the current coaching staff intact regardless of what happens in Philadelphia or the playoffs, should the Cowboys get that far. They can clinch a wild-card spot with a victory over the Eagles. However, Jones stopped just short of saying specifically that Phillips will return in 2009.

He will be the coach there next year. No matter what happens the rest of this year. In a way, he is the perfect fit for a J.Jones owned team. A HC with another type personality would have blown up publicly at the owner by now. And some of his players. Not this guy. He is competent and willing to be the foil at the same time. A rare combination. Garrett appears to be a clone of him. They could win it all this year yet. Then you would see some real shows from that locker room next year.

Right on the head 50year, Jones needs sycophants to surround him and powder his ego ,but this team is still dangerous and built to be for a while.

December 27, 2008  09:15 AM ET

if we lose on sunday, he's outtie 5000

December 27, 2008  10:43 AM ET

What if you could convince him to step back to be Defensive Cordinator and coudl covince Cowher to be the Head Coach.

December 27, 2008  10:55 AM ET

Jimmy Johnson's success in Dallas was built around his control. He was head coach and general manager. First thing he did was to dump uber-prima donna Hershel Walker (which he wasn't allowed to do in Miami with Marino) and build the winner of the 90s with that trade.

Jerry Jones will never relinquish that kind of control again and we will never see another Jones owned, successful Cowboys.

everyone here is correct-- that is the problem. What I find interesting is that Jones always says "as I stand here......" or something to that effect, strange choice of words when talking about this situation.

I agree, Ever since Jimmy and Jerry parted ways Jones has always had calm mellow easy going coaches.
I also agree, IF the Cowboys can win and get into the playoffs, they could surprise a lot of teams...I think its the pressure of just getting in, once that is off they can relax and just score some touch downs...lots of them!

IF THEY LOSE ON SUNDAY HES GONE

You can't believe Jones. He is a frustrated coach, who needs to stay in his box and get another plastic surgeon. I have seen roadkill that look better then he does.

i'm so sick of dallas and it actors

No, I think the pressure would then become ten-fold to win that first playoff game and get that monkey off their back. Not sure they can handle that kind of pressure. I hope they do just to get all the Cowboy haters off of our backs too. LOL!

But I totally agree with you on the coaching choices since Jimmy left. My God, Chan Gailey and Wade Phillips should do counseling, they are so mellow and appeasing. Only Bill Parcells lit a fire where it should have been.

My team is the king and queen of the prom. I like drama!!

December 27, 2008  03:25 PM ET

I saw other reports of that press conference and Jones stated that all of the coaches will be back next year so I do not understand this headline and item.

IRVING, Texas -- Wade Phillips will be back as coach of the Dallas Cowboys next season, and Jason Garrett will remain in charge of the offense, regardless of whether the team makes the playoffs, club owner Jerry Jones said Friday.

You know that!!!!! Jones will drop an asst coach laden staff like bad habits!!! He's not quite on the Al Davis/George Steinbrenner level though.

December 27, 2008  09:42 PM ET

If Wade believes Jerry, than so do I.

December 27, 2008  10:04 PM ET

I do not think there is any veteran top coach that wants the job. Too many side shows. Phillips is it...Coaching the Cowboys is only a good job in the eyes of Cowboy fans.

December 27, 2008  10:22 PM ET

What the heck, dump him whether they make it to the playoffs or not. Stir things up a bit.

December 28, 2008  09:01 AM ET

There's also the little matter of the 3 million dollars remaining on Wade's contract that jones would have to pay him if he is fired. Also, any new head coach will likely not want Jason garrett as his OC so there's another 3 million to cover. Even Jones' pockets are not infinitely deep with the current economic woes the country is suffering.

Also, as has been noted, Jones wants a puppet that he can control and he also wants to be able to take full credit for any success the Cowboys have on the field. Wade is more than happy to let Jones take credit as long as he gets to stay HC of Americas team.

When Wade's contract expires next season, look for Mike Holmgren to take over. Supposedly he and Jones are good friends. He might even be willing to tutor Garrett some more. There's worse offensive minds to learn from.

December 28, 2008  11:52 AM ET

Jerry is stupid if he doesn't go after Cowher. Phillips is like Norve Turner. A better Cordinater then a coach. Parcels built it, Phillips destroyes it. Marty ShotHisBubble built it, Norv destroyes it.

Your so right. Denial runs ramped with them.
