Will Bengals tag Houshmandzadeh?

Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis on Friday denied a report that the team would not use its franchise tag on wide receiver T. J. Houshmandzadeh. The NFL Network had made the claim on Wednesday night, citing a league source. Lewis told Bengals.com Friday it was "an untrue report." Houshmandzadeh told the Web site the team hasn't told his agent whether he would be tagged. Regardless, a lot could happen between now and the Feb. 22 tag deadline. Franchise tags often create a contentious long-term contract negotiating environment, so by saying it won't tag a player, a team shows a good faith attempt to sign him long term. If contract talks fail, however, the tag could become a viable option again. And even if the Bengals did use the tag on Houshmandzadeh, they still could sign him long term up until July 15. But if they don't reach a long-term deal by then, they can't use the tag on him the following season and he becomes an unrestricted free agent.

I wonder if they really are still keeping Marv Lewis in the loop?

Poor TJ deserves better...I think he and Palmer are the only Bengals without rap sheets.

There will be a big make over on the Bengels, it will be a tag and trade. The first, third and sixth pick the Cowboys paid for Williams will be the asking price, but no team will go that high for him. He will get a one plus something in a trade and sign.

I can see the Giants making a play for the guy. Would be a smart move, and with the 2 and 5 they got for Shockey and the money back off the cap from Burress they could make it fit...

I'd like to see both of these guys playing elsewhere.

if palmers not gonna be ready, theres no need in tagging him let him go and get his bread and some wins for a change

December 27, 2008  09:41 AM ET

It looks like T.J.s letting the fans in Cincy know how many more games until the pain stops.
Or he's shushing them from booing his team.

December 27, 2008  11:41 AM ET

I WOULDNT LET HIM GO HES THE REAL DEAL.

December 27, 2008  11:45 AM ET

If they franchise tag T.J. that means Chad Ocho Cinco is gone they not gonna keep the both of them I hope they let T.J. and leave and join a contender like eagles, giants, dolphins or ravens
he deserves to win

They better cut '85', then. I wouldn't give up a first-day pick for him.

thats funny. perhaps you should know the vikes have been in the top 10 nfl teams with arrests for the past 2 seasons whereas the bengals haven't been in the top 25.

know the facts. or come off as pure opinion.

December 27, 2008  04:20 PM ET

They'll tag him if they can fit his name on the tag.

December 27, 2008  09:47 PM ET

Do the Bengals have a franchise player? can the League over rule the tag? or at least fine the Bengals for tagging anyone in the first place? It is kind of like the Rams tagging their punter as a franchise player. Gee wiz.

December 27, 2008  10:05 PM ET

If they tag him, they will trade him. That is the way teams go now....makes sense.

December 28, 2008  07:34 AM ET

I thought you had to have a franchise before you could use a franchise tag. Do the Bengals still have one?

DUH PEOPLE, CAN'T YOU ALL SEE THAT TJ IS A FRANCHISE PLAYER, AND AS A BENGAL'S FAN, I THINK THAT HE WILL GET A LONG TERM CONTRACT AS HE SO DESERVES IT. NEXT SEASON WE WILL SHOW ALL THE OTHER TEAMS WHO IS THE WINNER....GO BENGAL'S.
