Randy Johnson, a 21-year veteran, and the Giants agreed to a one-year, $8 million contract Friday. He can make another $2.5 million in incentives. The 6-foot-10 left-hander, who is five wins shy of 300, will join Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain, Jonathan Sanchez and Barry Zito in the Giants' season-opening rotation. That is, unless one is traded. The A's also were interested in Johnson, a 1982 Livermore High School graduate, but Meister had made it clear the Giants were the preferred team. Though GM Brian Sabean has said he's not interested in trading any of his starting pitchers, Johnson's arrival may fuel speculation that a starter will be dealt to improve the offense.

He'll apparently sign with anyone for 300 wins. Although that is a pretty good rotation.

December 27, 2008  09:05 AM ET

Oh well, if he croaks they can throw him over the outfield wall and bury him at sea.

December 27, 2008  09:25 AM ET

bad signing for a team that is in dire need of OFFENSE
they simply cannot afford to replace RJ WHEN he goes
on the DL with a quality pitcher... they don't have the resources
the Yank/sox have to simply cut a check for someone else

$8 to $10.5 million.... are you eFFing kidding me!? Giants are clueless when it comes to giving pitchers $$$

December 27, 2008  10:46 AM ET

The NL West is horrible... And that's a decent rotation... The Giants may have just won the West... Even with a horrible offense

The giants are clueless. Hah Hah. How about Carl Pavano or anyone one else the Yankees over pay for. And over pay is what the Yankees do...

December 27, 2008  11:35 AM ET

considering it's only a one year deal and no one wants to play there it's not a bad deal. It's better to overpay for 1 year instead of 4 or 5 like a lot of bad teams have to do. The Giants should have a good rotation next year and if they could land Manny, say 1 year 30 mil they might be able to win the division.( you overpay so your only committed for 1 year and Manny becomes motivated for his next paycheck)

I WOULDNT TRADE ANY OF YOUR STARTERS HE IS PROBABLY ONE YEAR ONLY

I'm sure the Jays would still trade Alex Rios for Lincecum like last year. I think Lincecum's value has gone up considerably from a year ago when the trade was in the works.

with the Giants that doesn't mean that he is going to get those 5 wins...

D'backs fan's stomachs are churning over this deal. Randy can go F himself.

Your bashing New York for Pavano? Can we say.......Barry Zito? How many wins does he have since crossing the bay? Pavano was a bad signing. At least his was injuries. What's Zito's excuse. He just forgot how to pitch.

Sign Manny to a 1 year deal? Do you know why he's not signed yet? Cause he wants a 4 year deal. And you think he is gonna go to Frisco for 1? Yeah and Johnson will win 20 and strike out 300 too....Keep smokin' the weed. Obviously it's helping....LMAF

Decent? That's a great rotation in the NL.

Who cares.. You outbid yourselves for C.C... He getting 10 mil less than your outbid.. GIVE ME A BREAK!! Wait a minute, isn't C.C. signing bonus like 9.5 mil.. Trust me, I know C.C. is at the top of his game, but STOP WITH THE SPENDING, you are a Yankees FAN, STOP!!

December 27, 2008  03:03 PM ET

This is a not a bad sign for the Giants, a little too much for him (if it was the Yankees they would have paid him Clemens money, about 25 mil for half a season) but this looks like a solid rotation. But Sabean, where is the offense? You need to score runs.. Time to pick up or trade for some hitters..

December 27, 2008  03:22 PM ET

its a decent rotation Zito and the big Eunich are useless, the others are stellar. I wouldn't be surprised if the Giants trade one of them to the Yankmes for the fading Matsui. Sanchez or Cain , Lincecum is or should not be considered in any trade. As for winning the division <Laughing hard> No Chance. Dodgers and Arizona still are the Middle class of that division the rest are Low class to poverty stricken--Aka padres

Am I the only one who like Noah Lowry? He did lead the Giants in wins before the injury. i think he would be a solid fifth pitcher behind Lincecum, Cain, Sanchez, and Zito
