Why Red Sox won't OK Rangers trade

The Red Sox, of course, would like to trade for a young catcher - like Arizona's Miguel Montero, or the Texas twosome of Jarrod Saltalamacchia or Taylor Teagarden - to fill the void. But, according to a team source, no trades are on the horizon. Prices have yet to come down for teams intent on stealing a valuable pitching prospect (specifically the Rangers, who like Clay Buchholz). Saltalamacchia is coming off a stint in the Dominican Winter League in which he hit .364 with a 1.354 OPS and nine home runs in 20 games. He had two errors, as he continues to work on his defense.

similar thread as the other day-
In general- you shouldn't trade young pitching
but the sox are in DIRE need of a catcher & they are
one of a few teams that has a surplus of young arms
there aren't too many quality YOUNG catchers around,
let alone on the market
They should do what it takes- period

I'm lost without a Teixeira thread!

Red Sox... you have like 5 type A pitching prospects and buy every asian pitcher on the market. I know I am a Yankees fan, and why listen to me... but if you could pick up a amazing Catching prospect (especially since your only option is Tek for 2 more years) I would do it in a heartbeat. It is just as important to have someone good behind the dish calling the game, as it is the person on the mound making the pitches.

Typical clueless Yankee fan, nothing to see here.

what did he say that is so 'outrageous' ?
- you need to give up quality to get quality

I think the Red Sox should hold firm here as they did with Tex! Having principle and holding firm during the Henry/Epstein years has won the Red Sox TWO (2) World Series in addition to TWO additional seventh games in the ALCS in the past SIX (6) years! The Red Sox ARE NOT like the Idiot Empire overpaying and bidding against themselves for every player on their roster. What has Cashman done for the Yankees by comparison, BIGGEST PAYROLL BY FAR, ZERO (0) rings!

The Yankees have a lot of money for sure but even the Yankees can not sustain this type of expenditure in what looks like a terrible economy for years to come, no business can, look around!

Burnett = Pavano, that is exactly what his career projects (do your homework).
CC will be hard pressed to match Mussina's 20 wins!
How much will Tex improve upon Giambi's 32 HR and 96 RBI?

Who is going to replace Bobby Abreu numbers, .296 AVE, 20 HR and 100RBI? Batting .300 and knocking in 100 RBIs does not grow on trees!

Other than a recently operated on Mariano Rivera the Yankees bullpen stinks!

Matsui, Damon, Posada and Jeter are another year older and slower and well below average defensively.

Imagine the pressure on the Yankees this year in their own ballpark and arounf the league should they not hit the ground running!

Have we learned nothing about what short term satisfaction from overspending does for us? Nothing!

Again the Red Sox are building long term success and the proof is in the pudding!

Go Red Sox!

Red Sox still have Yankees Syndrome where they view the entire league as their personal farm system. Salty for Buchholz is a great trade for Boston and Texas. Each side deals a very good young player from a position of strength for a position of weakness. The Rangers aren't going to just hand over one of their brightest young stars because the almighty Red Sox want him.

December 27, 2008  11:17 AM ET

Wake up. The Red Sox need a catcher not an entire team. Their pitching (starting and relief), infield, and outfield are all pretty solid. Tek can't hit, can barely field and is old. $10M is way too much for him at this point in his career. It's time to buy a catcher!

December 27, 2008  11:27 AM ET

If you want long term success, you might want to acquire a good, young cheap catcher instead of being stuck with a bad, old expensive has been.

Maybe the Yankees could swing a deal with Boston, where the Sox give the Yanks pitching and Texeira going to the Sox to play catcher? How 'bout that T&R, I scooped you!

December 27, 2008  11:32 AM ET

Right Now the Red Sox have no catchers. Their farm system does not have anyone who can play in the Major Leagues in 2009. They can re-sign Vatriek and sign a back-up for next year. Of if they don't re-sign Vartiek, then the Red Sox would have to trade one of thier top propsects for Saltalamacchia or Teagarden of Texas or Montero of Arizona. So far the Rangers want pitching in return for their catchers and the D-Backs want prospects in return for Montero and the Red Sox refuse to do either. Sooner or later the Red Sox are going to need a catcher.

It's funny how the Barstain newspapers keep bringing this story up every few days like it somehow is going to put pressure on the Rangers in any way to come down on their demands for one of their catchers. NOBODY CARES IN ARLINGTON. Either the Red Sox are going to pony up to what the Rangers want or go look elsewhere for a catcher. Get a life, Globe reporters.

You mean a great deal for Texas. It won't happen, period!

You seem to be under the impression that Texas is in control, they aren't.

Like they ponied up for Tex?

just wanted to repeat what I wrote on the Hughes post.....

It's funny- because we 'buy' our rings....
yet who from the FIRST red sox title was 'home-grown' ????

- Varitek, nixon and arroyo---- THAT's IT-
manny, ortiz, damon, shill, pedro, lowe, foulke
ALL the MAJOR pieces were ACQUIRED

- dude- get a clue- we are the SAME..........

December 27, 2008  11:42 AM ET

If the price for Salty is really Buchholz the Sox would be insane not to make the deal. There is no good reason to believe Clay will bounce back from an awful year, head cases rarely get better.

Get a catcher and tell Tek and Bora$$ to drop dead. It will be amusing to watch Tek end his career on a last place team and an important message to Bora$$ and his culture of greed.

December 27, 2008  11:43 AM ET

Texas has no pressure to win or keep up with anybody. Boston doesn't have that luxury. I'm sure The Red Sox faithful won't be pleased if they finish 3rd behind the Yankees and Rays because they insisted on keeping their glut of good pitching prospects. Buchholz was pretty bad last year, so it's not like he's a sure thing anyway.

December 27, 2008  11:47 AM ET

I would say it's almost worth signing anyone else but Tek, unless you get him dirt cheap, just so you get someone's first round pick. It's not like your going to see a great drop in production.
