I spoke to Marshall Faulk on Monday, and he was upset over ESPN reporting that he wanted to be the Rams' next head coach. Faulk strongly denied it. Then in another interview, he talked in hypothetical terms -- of coaching the team if he could have an offensive coordinator such as Mike Martz, and a defensive coordinator such as Wade Phillips.

While he may not have any coaching experience, the list of players who have moved from player to coach quite successfully is long and distinguished. I'm just not certain that any of them went from player directly to head coach or offensive or defensive coordinator. From what I've seen, most started their coaching careers as position coaches for the position they played.

While I respect Faulk as an analyst, I just don't see him as a head coach at this point in his career.

And that's how they get "coaching experience"--which was the point of the Emperor's comment.

Of course, Faulk came out several years ago with his belief that the Apollo moon landing's were faked. He didn't exactly impress me with his critical thinking skills--and it takes more to be a successful head coach than simply being a great intuitive running back.

Is this typical of a St. Louis Post Dispatch report???... If it is... It's the worst newspaper in the country

lol....so basically if he had professional offensive & devensive coaches around him he could basically sit back, collect a paycheck & be a head coach ???
LOL
kinda sounds like George Bush....... that turned out well

JUST BECAUSE SOMEONE SAYS THEY WANT TO DO IT DOESNT MEAN THEY WILL GET THE CHANCE TO DO IT

That Cowboys rag and the NY Post come to mind before the Dispatch.

Rumor has it that he has read the coaching bible: Magic Johnson's book "Superstar Coaching", and has been talking extensively with McHale about how its done today. Think he's planning on bringing in Jackie Slater to run the offense too...

Nah, I think Brett Favre is set to be his offensive coordinator. Assuming he retires (and stays that way).

ESPN has a nasty habit of reporting what people say. Obviously this upsets people. Maybe these idiots should quit saying stuff they don't want reported.

December 27, 2008  02:37 PM ET

i could coach too if i had those two guys

December 27, 2008  03:20 PM ET

He can run and catch, but he does not have the right background to be a coach.

What background would that be? The guy has eaten and slept football for his entire life and has two trips to the Super Bowl under his belt. He obviously knows a thing or two about the game.

Bet he takes over the Cowgirls..............

And where does it say you have to have coachin experience to be a good coach or to be a coach at all. Point you don't. Bill Russell once said experience don't mean s***. There you have it from a true player, coach and G.M.
