Hughes may replace Pettitte in Yankees' plans
Before the Yankees signed Mark Teixeira, they told Andy Pettitte's camp that the pitcher's chances of rejoining the Bombers would be in jeopardy if they signed another big free agent. Now that the Yanks have landed their new first baseman, the odds of Pettitte being a Yankee next year are "55-45 against," according to a baseball official familiar with the Yanks' plans. Instead, the official said, the Yankees may turn to Phil Hughes, who blew his chance in the rotation last year because of a combination of injuries and ineffectiveness, as a starter behind CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, Chien-Ming Wang and Joba Chamberlain. Hughes is still considered one of the Yankees' best young players, and many in the organization are eager for him to have another shot.

Time to give the " kids" a chance in that number five spot. If Andy Pettitte does not hurry up and make up his mind, he is going to miss out on that 3 year 36 million dollar offer from a mystery team too.....lol

agree 100%
- you can't 'eliminate' every spot in the rotation.
you gotta give the kids something to shoot for.....
Hughes is only 22 even though he has been a FAILURE
so far- he still is extremely young and has been pampered
but he WILL mature & barring another fluke injury will
be a part of the team for the next 10 years.

Not to compare Hughes, or anybody, to Guidry, but I remember Guidry was so bad when they first brought him up that Billy Martin went out to the mound one day and asked him to just tell him who he could get out and he would have him pitch to him.....The point: The young pitchers can not be ruled out yet. It is an Art..

Still SO young, with great stuff. Some awful luck in the last couple of years. If solidifying the top of the order gives us some breathing space at the bottom, it's a win-win.
But that won't keep the haters at bay. When we sign FAs, we're monsters; when we develop struggling talent we're idiots.
Yawn.....

Hughes is a flat out stud and has been talked about since he was 19. Remember he did great at the last half of the season in '07 (amazing in the playoffs), and was injured last year at the young at of 22. He has been tearing up the fall leagues and feel he should have the chance to pitch and learn from CC, AJ, Wang, and Joba. Plus... there will be a lot less pressure with those 4 in front of him.

You cannot have two starters( Joba/Hughes) in the rotation with limited innings pitched, that would lead to an overused bullpen. If Pettitte doesn't return than Yankees need a back of the rotation type pitcher or perhaps give Aceves a shot. Hughes would be a great #6 reserve pitcher used for a spot start or insurance when injuries occur.

- Varitek, nixon and arroyo---- THAT's IT-
manny, ortiz, damon, shill, pedro, lowe, foulke
ALL the MAJOR pieces were ACQUIRED

not true when Wang & cc....if healthy -
will be going into the 7th & 8th most games
no reason joba & hughes shouldn't make 6-7 innings
the majority of the time

You know, I find it's rarely the Red Sox fans who make that accusation; they know we're both playing the same game, and they're usually well-informed.
It's the small town whiners who haven't won in a while who direct all their anger at the Yanks. But give the Sox another ring, and they'll start catching it as much as we do.

I mentioned yesterday that in the last ten years, FIFTEEN DIFFERENT TEAMS have made it to the WS. That's half the teams in baseball.
So I'm still waiting for someone to explain exactly what a salary cap is supposed to "fix".

Actually, the team you're talking about was the SIXTH Red Sox title. (Technically fifth, the first was the Boston Americans in 1903). As for Varitek, Nixon and Arroyo being the only 'home-grown' talent: Varitek was acquired in the same trade with Seattle that brought Lowe (in exchange for Heathcliff Slocumb). And Arroyo was picked up off waivers after pitching two-and-a-half less-than-mediocre seasons in Pittsburgh. So really, the ONLY player in that World Series that was developed by the Red Sox was Trot Nixon. Nomar would have been the other but was traded to the Cubs. There were only two other players on the entire roster throughout the season who were drafted by Boston: Youkilis played in 72 games and hit .260 with 7 HR and Anastacio Martinez pitched in parts of 11 innings. There were more players drafted by the New York Mets and Pittsburgh on the roster than by Boston.

Excellent points. But as I said earlier, it'll take another ring or two before Boston gets its share of venom from the Hater Army.

If they can get Hughes to trust his stuff and actually hit the plate once in awhile so he won't throw 100 pitches in 4 innings, he will be great, that and keeping himself healthy
