Miami mayor's bowl payoff deemed illegal

Miami's mayor and San Francisco's mayor have a wager on Saturday's 7th Annual Emerald Bowl between the Hurricanes and the California Golden Bears. And Miami had better win, because Mayor Manny Diaz has promised to send oranges if they lose. That would be illegal. Florida oranges can't be shipped to California because of fears that citrus canker could spread to the California crop. Helena Poleo, a spokeswoman for Diaz, said the mayor won't break the law. If Miami wins, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom has promised to send Diaz a case of Napa Valley wine and sourdough bread. An official at Hawaii's Department of Agriculture suggested a substitute if the Hurricanes come up short. Orange juice. Or pineapple juice.

What a country. California worries more about oranges from Florida than it does about illegals pouring across its borders everyday.....go figure.

I disagree, I like the cultural exchange. I live outside Chicago, whenever a Chicago team is in the finals Mayor Daley wagers deep dish pizzas from Lou Malnotti's -- trust me you WANT Chicago to lose, those pies are awesome. Seattle wagers salmon, Maryland crabs, etc. I think it's one of the BETTER ideas for people to represent their region.

Why don't they just exchange gays.

December 27, 2008  01:01 PM ET

Perhaps Mayor Manny Diaz should instead send a couple ounces of cocaine, Florida's other cash crop?

P.S. Tell Mayor Newsome that he can keep his bread and wine, after all, these are supposed to be men betting!

December 27, 2008  01:21 PM ET

Newsome's response: "F--- the f---ing Diaz brothers! I bury dose cockaroach!"

Maybe Shannon can kick the mayor out of office along with ALL the players from his team...

if they dont show up for class, they will get suspended. thats how randy shannon rolls. its probably THE most disciplined team in the country, this isnt the 90's.

GO CANES.

Too many funny comments! LOL!!

And bullseye about more concern for a fungus than thousands of illegals pouring across the border. Here in North Carolina it seems that every fatal drunk driving crash and half the murders are now caused by an illegal.

stupid article...waste of time

December 27, 2008  05:18 PM ET

even friendly wagers break the law.

December 27, 2008  05:56 PM ET

I don't think Otto has a citrus canker...
