How Georgia kept coach from Auburn
Georgia won't lose its highly regarded offensive line coach, Stacy Searels, to Auburn. Searels, who was being pursued by his alma mater for a position on new coach Gene Chizik's staff, has decided to stay in his current job, Georgia coach Mark Richt said Friday night. Richt indicated that Searels will receive a salary increase, although he wouldn't provide specifics. "You always want to let people know how you feel about them," Richt said. "We let him know." Searels' current salary is $235,400 annually, fourth highest among Richt's assistants. "Everybody is going to get a boost," Richt said.

Wise decision from Searels. The coaching staff put together by Chizik may not have a very long life. Hope I'm wrong and Chizik is a success. It's nice the other assistant coaches get the benefit of a boost from Searels being sought after.

All they had to do was show him tapes of the Auburn games....how hard was that.

I know Georgia had a lot of injuries on the line, but after seeing some of the games they played I don't think this guy deserved a raise.

I don't think Searels wanted to work for an athletic department that has no idea how to go about a coaching search. I would rather stay with a head coach that has won 70+ games than one that has only won 5 in two seasons.

Searels didn't want to be a loser with AU. I can't blame him for that.

Maybe Chiz can get Jacobs to help on the search. I need more head scratching decisions.

If you really believe that, then you have no clue about football. Zero. None. Not just this year, but last year as well, UGA has used more than 15 different combinations of starters on the Offensive Line, due primarily to injuries (including losing their pre-season All American OT before the first game this year). Of the starters that commonly were used, most had far fewer than 12 games of college experience-- not fewer than 12 games *started* mind you, fewer than 12 games even PLAYED IN. With that kind of inexperience, it's frankly amazing that Stafford wasn't getting creamed on every passing down this year.
Everyone who knows college football well has said that Searles has done miracles with what he's had to deal with-- in fact, he's done such an incredible job, I think he probably should be the second-highest paid coach on the team, in my opinion. I'm incredibly happy that he stayed, but honestly, aside from the lure of coaching at his alma mater, I didn't see what Auburn really would have to offer him, so I wasn't overly worried that he'd go.

Richt's teams always underperform. Stacy is waiting for AU to offer him the head coach job. Unfortunately, Stacy will have to work for a couple more teams before AU needs his services again. Richt will be gone in less than 3 years. His assistants give him great recruits and he brings them down to his level.

I assume you're a bama fan so how many SEC 'ships has your team won this decade? CMR has won 2 of them and bama hasn't won any so who underperforms??

considering the greater talent level (and coaching advantage until last year) uga has had over bama this decade, YEAH they have underperformed. even this year they had a more talented roster than bama, and how'd that work out?

UGA had more talent at the QB position and maybe RB (Moreno vs. Coffee is pretty close)...but Bama was far better and more experienced than UGA on both the offensive and deffensive lines....and that made all the difference.

I won't say they always underperform. But I saw highlights of the UGA-WV Sugar Bowl and thought, "Hell, that looked exactly like our game with UGA this year."

Most people, and most UGA fans, said UGA was more talented than Alabama at every position before the game they played against each other, except maybe at center.

Really? Is that before or after we lost our best linemen? Bama clearly was underestimated this year, but after they lost to UL-Monroe last season can you blame us?

well whatever makes you feel better, but uga has had the more highly sought after recruits on their team in the recent past, INCLUDING this year. by the way i wouldn't solely judge any team on one loss from the previous year

I'm not blaming you for anything. I'm just stating a fact. Most people, including UGA fans, felt like they were overall much more talented than Bama. Many Alabama fans thought so, too.
I'm not sure what the controversy was/is. Hell, I'm pretty sure I saw a lot of UGA fans still say they were more talented even after they lost to Bama and claimed that if we played 10 games in a row that UGA would win the majority of them. To try and backtrack now and claim that UGA possibly was under-talented and playing over their heads is a little disingenuous, if you ask me.

Hey Kidd,
I believe the point at the beginning of this discussion was that UGA "was" more talented at most positions at the beginning of the season... But, due to injuries, most fans realized that UGA was outmatched in the trenches, which is truly where the game is won...
