Kerry Wood's next step back

Kerry Wood will throw his first bullpen session since spring training Tuesday at Wrigley Field, a big step back from the shoulder problem that has sidelined him the last three months. The Cubs are putting no timetable on Wood's return, and it normally wouldn't take a reliever as long to rehab his arm as a starter.

1 step forward, 2 steps back!

June 26, 2007  11:13 AM ET

I feel bad for the guy honestly. Reason being is each of the last 3 years, Kerry has really busted his butt in the offseason to better himself and try to prevent and/or rehab these injuries. He isn't on the DL for lack of a work ethic, I think he is just plain snake-bit. A shame too, great talent, and a great work ethic, going to waste.

It hurts me to write it, but Kerry Wood is finished. Done. I mean, Rick Sutcliffe done. He's not coming back, and neither is Mark Prior. These guys are damaged goods. Notice the stark lack of trade offers for them.

June 26, 2007  11:42 AM ET

Sadly - CubSufferer your spot on. Kills me but Wood and Prior had such great careers ahead and it all went down hill after their first injuries. At this point a late round draft pick would be the trade. Hopefully, we are wrong and they can comeback some day to pitch the lights out.

June 26, 2007  12:42 PM ET

imagine what the cubbies might be if Wood and Prior didnt have these injuries issues. It really is tragic. I feel bad for both of them. They didnt ask for these problems.

June 26, 2007  12:49 PM ET

I read somewhere they were overused early in their careers.

June 26, 2007  12:58 PM ET

Wood was damaged his rookie year. It can be argued that he was overused but I think he just wasn't ready for the amount of innings expected from a major league starter. He went down at the end of his rookie year and hasnt been the same.

June 26, 2007  01:17 PM ET

Prove to me that he was on steroids mcg. That is an idiotic comment.

June 26, 2007  01:24 PM ET

Yeah, he definitely wasn't on steroids.

June 26, 2007  02:02 PM ET

I love Kerry Wood and Mark Prior but it's a great thing Management finally smartened up and didn't put our season on their shoulders! And just think, during last offseason we could have traded Mark Prior straight up for Miguel Tejeda! Anyone else remember when that deal almost went down? If Wood can get healthy enough to be in the bullpen he could be an amazing closer! He has the stuff and the power, just not the health...

"It can be argued that he was overused"

"but I think he just wasn't ready for the amount of innings expected from a major league starter."

That's the same thing, patdoggy.

June 26, 2007  03:30 PM ET

Current thought is to limit the total season inning for a rookie pitcher as they are used to less inning in a minor league season. That is the current thought anyway.

June 26, 2007  04:24 PM ET

It doesn't have as much to do with overuse as his really bad mechanics. During his 20 strike out game, Astro players in the dugout said there was no way this guy would stay healthy in his career.

June 26, 2007  05:14 PM ET

I blame it on the billy goat.

June 26, 2007  06:52 PM ET

mcg thinks everyone's on steroids--it's his stock response.

I think CubsSufferer is right. Two potentially great pitchers, sadly mismanaged. Heartbreaking.

June 26, 2007  07:29 PM ET

You'll probably think I'm nuts, but I think the Cubbies just put too much pressure on Prior and Wood. They have got to stop thinking everyone they get who has one big year will end up being a Hall of Famer. I love the Cubbies but I don't always agree with their decisions.

June 26, 2007  09:16 PM ET

C'mon, folks. Wood and Prior are emblematic of the Cubs for the last century. Next year...next year...next year...

And I love the Cubs.

June 26, 2007  09:39 PM ET

stupid cubs killed both these guys arms
wasted two futre all stars

June 26, 2007  09:42 PM ET

Hey mcg & Willie Mays Hayes, I will make a prediction on this one and please hear me out. I think Mark Prior and Kerry Wood may end up talking to George Mitchell. Here's why. I don't think either of them took steroids as performance enhancers. That wouldn't make much sense actually.
BUT they may very well have taken steroids as part of a doctor supervised rehabilitation from their arm and shoulder problems. While the benefits of steroids as performance enhancers is hotly debated, there is a common acceptance of steroids in the medical profession as a legitimate treatment for injuries. So it wouldn't surprise me if the Cubs had one or both of them on steroids while trying to keep them on the field. And yes, sadly, I agree that they were both overworked early in their careers and are now damaged goods with little prospect for fulfilling their promise.

What I would like to see is professional sports reach some agreement on which prescription drugs CAN be administered under a doctor's care.
The assumption has always been that the players took steroids without their team's knowledge or consent. Personally, I think that is b**ls**t.
The trainers and doctors knew what the players were doing, especially in the cases of pitchers with arm problems. As I understand it, the steroid ban applies to ALL uses, legitimate or not. The real question is whether this is fair or if some exceptions should be allowed where steroids are legally prescribed by a league sanctioned physician. This isn't being discussed and I think it should be. In the meantime, Selig is doing what he does best which is being a pr**k and conducting a witch hunt. Maybe Selig is on steroids. I understand one of the aftereffects of steroid use is shrinkage of the testicles. Hmmmm...That would explain a lot.

cubs team doctors and front management are to blame for this....look at the history, wood says his arm hurts, they give him cursory team doctor look and says looks fine, he keeps pitching gets worse, cubs send to other doctors but do not pay for die test, keep telling him he is fine, finally spring for die test and bam...oh yeah you have a torn rotator cuff....how the @%$#@ could they not have found that out before?

Prior same thing, my arm hurts, team: you are a whiner, doc says all is well, he pitches some more, say arm hurts, they say it is just a loose joint and hereditary...finally goes to a doctor who tells him he has multiple shoulder injuries....

Who are these idiots that take care of these guys? If I spent millions and millions on players they would be seeing THE best doctor every time...not the team quack the cubs have on staff
