Mets consider signing Varitek

The Mets have been entertaining the thought of Jason Varitek to work with their pitching staff. If Derek Lowe, another Scott Boras client, should wind up signing with the Mets, there would be a chance that Lowe and Varitek could be reunited. Lowe has always called Varitek the best catcher he ever worked with.

Why don't Lowe and Varitek reunite in Boston instead?

December 28, 2008  08:22 AM ET

not sure if the mets need ANOTHER aging player.
- no I'm sure....they don't

They might want to reconsider. Just how does he make any offense better? The pitchers will throw nothing but fastballs with men on base, it is the only chance he has to throw anyone out .

This and the Manny rumor to the Yankees straight in from Scott Bora$$ office.

Bora$$ has out-smarted himself and screwed his clients. No one is going to give Varitek any meaningful money AND give up a first round pick for a back-up catcher, which is what he is. The only two teams that will give Manny big bucks and can afford to take a chance on Manny being Manny are the Yankees and Dodgers. The Yankees are already feeling the heat from their spending spree, signing Manny might be the last straw for even Bud Selig. Thus there are the Dodgers, who ought to offer him 2 years at $15 million each and 24 hours to decide.

I DONT THINK THAT HE IS WORTH THE PICKS YOU HAVE TO GIVE UP TO GET HIM I THINK THAT HIS BEST YEARS ARE BEHIND HIM BUT IF YOU DO NEED A BACKSTOP AND ARE DESPERATE I GUESS YOU NEED TO THROW SOMEONE BACK THERE.

Lowe would be a good pickup for the Mets...

December 28, 2008  01:07 PM ET

He called him that because Tek IS the best catcher he ever worked with. It's for that reason the Sox would be insane to let him go, and Theo is not insane.

Agreed. Much better fit then the Yanks.

December 28, 2008  01:36 PM ET

why are all of the stories about ex-sox players landing in the big apple coming from the boston globe? are they trying to guilt theo into signing some of these players by playing devils advocate.

December 28, 2008  02:14 PM ET

Tek is on the downside. It is time he moved on! Ths Sox do not hold on to players on the downside (Nomar, Pedro, Mo Vaughn, etc). Whomever wants him can have his declining defensive skills and subpar offensive numbers.

NO

I agree. The Mutts are a losing ball club,so why not have two losers in Lowe and Varitek to mess up any hope the Mutts have a good season for a change....LOLOLOL

Schnieder and Castro couldn't even throw anybody out with fastballs....

I am a Yankee fan but Varitek is one of the finest catchers I have ever seen. Posada is not nearly as good a catcher as Varitek.
Having said that, I think Varitek goes back to Boston - I see Manny and Lowe with the Yanks...The Yanks are probably not bringing back Petitte and they are probably going to trade Nady to free up som payroll.

December 28, 2008  07:12 PM ET

As a Red Sox fan, it would not bother me at all if the Mets sign him. It is time to move on. He was terrible in the 2nd half last year and will be 37 in April. And the Red Sox would get the bonus of getting 2 draft picks for him.

Varitek was an excellent catcher. But those days are past. If he could hit .240 with 15 hr, then I'd be all for re-signing him. But I don't think he has that in him anymore.

December 28, 2008  08:22 PM ET

If Varitek does sign with the Mets he must know it won't be for 3 or 4 years and def won't be for the $13.1M a year that Posada makes.

December 28, 2008  08:35 PM ET

Honestly Varitek is not that good. I'm sorry but aside from being able to call a good game what else can he do? His plate blocking skills are pretty bad as evidenced by the fact that Wakefield has a personal catcher for his starts because Tek cannot handle the balls in the dirt. He doesn't throw out runners all that well. And his most glaring flaw is that he cannot hit. He is an automatic out in the Sox line up with that 220 batting average. Add in his age to the equation and is it really a surprise that teams are not lining up to give him a 3-4 year deal at $13M per?

December 29, 2008  08:13 AM ET

Good, another aging has-been on that team. Good for them.

Please do.
