Did Carroll salute or jab Paterno?

It's always dangerous to read intent into people's comments when you aren't actually there listening to them speak, so we'll cut Southern Cal coach Pete Carroll some slack. But, talk about highlighting the negative. All Carroll did Friday at the first Rose Bowl news conference with Joe Paterno was harp on Joe's failures. "He's persevered so much," Carroll said as if Paterno was not the winningest coach in Division I-A college history. "I've thought about it, and to me it's not all the games that he's won; it's how he's survived the pressure of all the big games that you lose over that many years." Hello, Pete. It's only been 126 losses since 1966. That's an average of fewer than three losses per season. That doesn't seem so hard to take. "The losses are so difficult and so challenging," Carroll continued. "It's amazing that he's been able to keep the right attitude and stay on top of the game for so long." Yes, amazing. Job for life. Idolized by millions. Rich as Midas. Sounds tough to take. "It's kind of an unnatural experience he's put together," Carroll said. "And he's still full of the devil." Unnatural? What is Joe, an alien? The devil? Joe's more like Uncle Charlie than Satan. Get a clue, Pete.

whoever wrote this is full of crap. carroll was no more making fun of him than any other coach. i realize what's at stake at the bowl but i honestly believe that what was said was taken out of context.

I am no fan of Pete Carroll, but you got to be kidding.....He said nothing that was worth this kind of response. You have to wonder if the writer is the "****" son of Joe pa or something.

Since when can you not say Bastar*? What have we come to? Jeesh.

I think Pete is more in awe of how Paterno has been able to continue coaching well into his 80s (at a high profile program) with all the pressure that the job involves than he is being critical of him. But I agree with C & C it is a slow news day...

With 2008 almost over, a year where the downward spiral of sports journalism whirled faster than in recent memory, this may be one of the most ridiculous pieces of "writing" of the year. No way did Carroll attempt to "highlight the negative". If anything he was defending Paterno from the likes of the columnists like the ****, loser, geek, self-loathing subhuman who wrote these words. And where the **** are the editors of America's sports sections allowing this yellow-journalism to even be printed. Or are they the ones forcing this type of agenda on their columnists?

Charlie won a game so it's on to USC stories.............

December 28, 2008  11:10 AM ET

this is straight garbage news, but who cares come the 1st USC will com-PETE and send joe pa and his kitty kats packin!!

December 28, 2008  11:32 AM ET

People, people, this was written by someone from the Philadelphia Inquirer...which is the equivalent of a smaller version of the"Enquirer". Nothing more than a gossip news paper.

December 28, 2008  12:00 PM ET

Wow. This writer really doesn't get it. Carroll knows that the whole sports media is focused on SC's one loss this year, rather than on the wins. Everything Carroll gets is "why aren't you in the national championship," not "why are you so good for so long." Paterno gets the same. A few years ago everyone was calling for him to go away, for heaven's sakes, despite this magnificent record over the years. I wouldn't be surprised if this writer was one of those calling for people to resign...and now he takes the long view.

The Philadelphia Inquirer has taken the top spot as the worst of all fishwraps.... That they would put this load of crap into their paper says alot about them... And it's not good... And don't even get me started... On the hack who thought this was actually a good column to write... Aye yi yi

Hey, its Philly.....If it ain't provocative, it ain't printable. Thank God our country's early leaders saw fit to move the capitol from that armpit of a town. Very farsighted, they were.

December 28, 2008  01:17 PM ET

And besides, how many Penns have been calling for Joe Pa to step down in recent years. Now now, these same Penns berate a coach that might have just alluded to that with the word "pressure." One thing is for certain, Philly did have the makings of a capitol city; hypocrisy, short term memory, public scaldings, and an overwhelming lack of Quaker sensibility.

Philadelphia Inquirer, eh? I guess they use the same writers as the National Inquirer.

full of the devil?? i don't think anywhere is more full of the devil than southern California

December 28, 2008  02:31 PM ET

I can't stand Pete Carroll and I am no fan of the Trojans. But even I have to come to his defense on this one. It sounds to me that he was complimenting Paterno. This "journalist" needs to get a life, or another job.

Wow, I was going to make a comment, but you all stole the words right out of my mouth.
