Could Martz return as Rams coach?

St. Louis Post-Dispatch football writer Jim Thomas says Jim Haslett soon will have competition for the Rams' head coaching job in 2009 and beyond and that former Lions offensive coordinator Mike Martz is a longshot candidate for the position. Martz, who ran the Lions' offense in 2006 and 2007 before being fired, is now the offensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers. Torry Holt, a St. Louis wide receiver who knew Martz from when Martz was with the Rams, said, "Mike just wanted to win, man. Even though he may have (ticked) some people off, he did it his way." Thomas says more likely candidates include Bill Cowher of Pittsburgh; Mike Holmgren of Seattle; Marty Schottenheimer, who has 205 career wins as a coach; Rex Ryan, who is completing his 10th season with the Baltimore Ravens, and Jim Schwartz, who has 10 seasons as an assistant coach in Tennessee.

He is in San Fran now, if I were him I'd sue for putting up that pic in a Detroit uni.

I never thought I'd say this but...the Rams were better off with Martz than without him. We won't get any of the top guys so as long as he was ordered to hire a top shelf defensive coordinator why not Martz?

I can't believe I just wrote that..........

December 28, 2008  10:49 AM ET

GO AHEAD YOU CAN HAVE HIM BUT THE RAMS ARE GONNA PROBABLY LOSE HOLT SO

December 28, 2008  11:12 AM ET

Well everyone he had arguements with would be gone. Plus you have to admit everywhere he has gone. With the personnel he had to work with all improved by a 100%. Personally I think Martz would be a good fit again as the OC. You need a good Head Coach to corral a guy like that. The way Vermeil did. As far as Haslett, I would give him the reigns for the defense and let him try with a different front office so they can go get some of the personnel needed there. Well everywhere can you spell R E B U I L D and then maybe get back a little R E S P E C T.

he wont be back this is shear poppycock

December 28, 2008  12:08 PM ET

Lions 0-16 count on it !!! San Fran learn a lesson , Keep him and allow him to develop players , oh and by the way, Detroit was better off by letting him go ???? Politics and sports all tie together , would'nt look very good for the Ford Family to make profits by winning football games & ask for a bailout. you think Jerry Jones & Dan Snyder would have kept Wade or Zorn after losing 9 games ...Yeah right ....
oh , I bet there will be a playoff in near future for the BCS , Thanks for the political input Mr . Obama . Future Pres. ... Money ... Maybe I am wrong , maybe the Fords are that stupid .. They did keep Millen in front office for a very long time ?????

And we'll call it the "Greatest show on Turf", right............(sigh)

December 28, 2008  08:18 PM ET

Haslet is dead meat and should be. Martz's fatal mistake at STL was giving Kurt Warner the shaft. Marc Bulger is an "adequate" QB, not a superstar and never will be one. However, Martz & Bulger could probably make things happen with Avery, Burton and Holt still around and Monster-Beast Steven Jackson in the backfield. The 2009 draft better focus on Offensive Linemen. It's time to let Pace, Incognito, Barron, Bennett, Hall, Klopfenstein, Greene and defensive old timers like Little, Hall and Chavous hit the road. Tye Hill is a never-was. After 2 seasons, I've not seen much productivity out of Adam Carriker. And while Chris Long started off pretty good, he was invisible in the last few games. A couple extra sacks and the Rams might've won their last 3 games in a row. Bad team. Martz and a few decent draft choices couldn't hurt.

You mean the "genius"... i.e... IDIOT who LOST w/ Marshall Faulk???? "I have an idea. We'll beat the Pats by using Marshall as a decoy. They'd never see it coming!" Moron.

Forget it maybe VERMEIL

December 29, 2008  09:57 AM ET

I doubt Martz would be back, even though a lot of his adversaries are on their way out of Rams Park. Besides, Martz is a great OC, but lousy head coach.

I think they will clean house up and down the coaching staff and gon in an entirely new direction.

December 29, 2008  09:17 PM ET

Why?

December 30, 2008  03:39 AM ET

Why not? We're not going to get Cowher, Fassel, Billick, Schottenheimer, Vermeil or any other decent experienced coach? Wanna go with another newbie like Scott Linehan? Here's an idea: bring back Martz as HC and get Romeo Crennel for defensive coordinator. While Crennel was a flop as a HC, he proved himself on defense in NE. The Bellichick's ain't been the same without him. The Rams still have latent offensive talent sans the O-Line. And, they have a great kicker and punter. But their defense stinks virtually everywhere. No rush, no tackling, blown coverages, etc. Get Martz, draft some OL and a center, let Crennel try to fix the defense in 2009. Maybe go 7-9 or 8-8. Then in 2010 draft all defense and maybe get to 9-7 or 10-6. It would sure beat 3-13 and 2-14.

December 30, 2008  11:52 AM ET

I can't believe I'm saying this, but Martz wasn't that bad of a head coach. Where he was miserable was in assessing talent. Keep him far away from making any personnel decision, and some team could find themselves with a pretty good coach in Mike Martz... Just not the Rams. St. Louis has been there and done that with Martz. I can't see him possibly coaching the Rams again.

December 30, 2008  03:48 PM ET

The problem with Martz is he pretty much wants to pass the ball 70% of the time. Considering our best player is Jackson, he would have a hard time adhering to his philosophy while giving Jackson enough reps to keep him happy.

Having said that, I think Martz could have a field day with our receivers. Avery's got the talent, he just needs to get experience reading defenses and running patterns. Burton could be the same. If we can keep Holt, he'll still be a good possession receiver. Unfortunately, Bulger's like Pennington; good accuracy with short throws, but not really known for being a deep passer. We'd have to draft and develop someone with a cannon arm like Stafford to make Martz happy.

December 30, 2008  03:52 PM ET

And edpjr, I think the Rams' defense has been bad, but not horrible to the point that everyone's saying. The stats are bad, yes, but how many times did the Rams go three and out and force our D to go back out on short rest? How many interceptions and fumbles were lost in the Rams' end of the field? Given the amount of time that the D had to be out there, it's hard to imagine any team's defense not wearing down and giving up a lot of points (see the game against the Bills for a perfect example). They still need to develop some more, because they did give up a lot of big plays, but I think that they managed to keep the team in games a decent amount of time; it's just hard to win any game when the offense averages 14.5 points a game.

December 31, 2008  09:28 AM ET

Hasslet HC, Martz OC, Crennel DC, I'm just Thinkin'

December 31, 2008  06:10 PM ET

pike; granted the current Rams offense could stink up any defense. Nearly every time there was a chance to win with a late score, Bulger through an INT. Any time there was a chance to win by holding the ball and running out the clock, they promptly went 3 and out. But in weeks 15 & 16 against the Seahawks and 49ers, the Rams led big-time in time of possession stats and the D still caved in the 4th quarter. Also, how many times this year did the Rams D allow opponents to score on their very first offensive possession?? The D has got to get some steady pressure on opposing QB's and choke off the all too frequent 30-40 yard romps by opposing running backs. A single extra sack in each game might've won against the Pats, Dolphins, Hawks & 49ers. That would've made for a semi-respectable 6-10 season. But, in hindsight, I guess it's better to get the high draft picks, a new Coach and new front office personnel as a result of going 2-14.

December 31, 2008  06:28 PM ET

Or how about; Shanahan, Cowher, Billick, Fassel, Vermeil, or Schottenheimer for head coach with Martz as OC and Crennel as DC?

That would mean so long to Haslett and Venturi and almost cetainly to players like Orlando Pace, Richie Incognito, Alex Barron, Dante Hall. Drew Bennett, Joe Klopfenstein, James Hall, Leonard Little, Tye Hill, Cory Chavous, Dane Looker, Trent Greene, and others... Thanks for all the good years Pace and Little!
