Inside Vikings quarterback quandary

It's clear Gus Frerotte, 37, won't be the Vikings' starting QB next season. The Vikings would love for Tarvaris Jackson, 25, to quarterback them past the Giants today and into the playoffs for the first time since 2004. Then they wouldn't have to consider trading with the Eagles for Donovan McNabb for perhaps a second-round draft pick in April and a conditional pick in the following year. Or guaranteeing at least $25 million in an effort to sign unrestricted Patriots QB Matt Cassel. Or drafting Florida QB Tim Tebow, if he's available with the 20th or so overall pick, which appears to be a decent guess where the Vikings will choose in the first round in April. If Jackson shows today that he can win, it's clear the Vikings strongly will consider an offensive tackle high in the draft, as well as a cornerback. Antoine Winfield, 31, is terrific, but he's in his 10th season, and next year is the final year of his contract.

Jackson seems to have found out that he really is an NFL QB. I say let's see if he can get the job done.

The Vikes are pathetic-
either let the kid play or just go elsewhere....its not
a damn soap opera- what the hell are they even BOTHERING
with Ferrotte for?? even when he wasn't on social security
he was never much better than average.

December 28, 2008  09:14 AM ET

putting your playoff hopes on Tarvaris Jackson........not looking for job security huh?

December 28, 2008  09:19 AM ET

The Vikings traded two third round picks to get Jackson because Childress wanted him. He said he could develop the guy because he had first round skills and just needed coaching.
So, if I am the owner I tell Childress, we got your guy, now do your job. As he goes, so goes you....

Jackson has appeared to be ok in the last two-three games. I don't know If I would throw in the towel on him just yet. It always helps to have somebody to sit behind and learn from when first coming into the league as a qb. You either have to ride out the learning period or get a vet to lead you and let a young qb learn from the bench.

Yeah, the only soap operas are in New York and Boston.

Anyway, he played fine against the Falcons. It wasn't his fault his team mates couldn't hold onto the ball. Let him play, and if his chokes big time in the next few games, it may be time to move on. If not, he may be servicable if not great if the right parts can be put around him.

Frick this guy. Is Samuel Jackson available?

December 28, 2008  10:48 AM ET

THEY NEED A QB NONE OF THEIRS ARE WORTH ANYTHING AT NOT EVEN A BENCH SPOT

December 28, 2008  11:35 AM ET

Jackson has had everything going for him. Think about it: best RB in the NFL, elite offensive line, increasingly dependable receivers (esp. Shiancoe), and a coach who is infatuated with QBs. I belive he will be the starter next year because he seems to have finally realized he does not need to carry this team, thats AD's and the defense's job. TJ is high risk because of his running without sliding. If he doesnt run he won't be near as good though because defenses are overreacting to his scrambling. If the Vikes had Favre, McNabb, or Cassell next year they would be a formidable force in the NFC.

December 28, 2008  11:38 AM ET

Giants should let Vikes win. They can beat up their first round opponent and rest their starters for two weeks!!!

December 28, 2008  11:46 AM ET

I hope the Giants sit out there starters, and i honestly believe they should. They have so many key players who need the R&R. Guess we shall see what happens soon.

December 28, 2008  12:15 PM ET

it will over after this season since MCNABB will be the starter next year...

December 28, 2008  12:24 PM ET

even if t-jack wins this game if im the owner and gm i dont stand pat w/ him. that team is ready to "win now". go out and get a proven QB before u squander all chances of being a big time player in the post season next year

Aside from last weeks fumbles, lately, TJ has looked like a real QB. Sometimes you just don't get what you're supposed to do, then something clicks inside you and BAMMM...You get it! Gotta be grateful that Gus Frerotte was able to man the ship (no, not the Vikings love boat) while young TJ was unable to play like a man.

Although TJ looks good right now and I hope he becomes Minnesota's starter and does well, it's nice to hear names like Donavon McNabb, Matt Cassel and even though he'll go before the 20th pick...Tim Tebow as possible Vikings QBs.

December 28, 2008  02:03 PM ET

that was a very good article

December 28, 2008  02:06 PM ET

Ding Ding.... Paging Mr. Cassell... Mr. Cassell your position is ready and waiting for you in Minnesota

December 28, 2008  03:38 PM ET

TEBOW BETTER THAN WHAT U HAVE ALREADY...BUT MCNABB IS TO OLD...CASSELL IS PRIMED AND READY

December 28, 2008  04:06 PM ET
