Yankees still option for Manny?
Manny Ramirez is next up for Scott Boras. By Mark Teixeira signing with the Yankees, it likely eliminated Ramirez from going there, though the drama of Ramirez vs. the Red Sox and the ratings bonanza that would mean for YES (let alone NESN) is still tugging a tad at the purse strings of some members the Yankees' brass. The Nationals and Angels, who bid for Teixeira, were two teams Ramirez also seemed suited for, but they have indicated they're no longer in the market for him. The other team in the Teixeira hunt, the Orioles, has not said anything about Ramirez, who has hit well at Camden Yards (.314 with 18 homers, 24 doubles, and 76 RBIs in 338 at-bats). The Dodgers remain a viable option, as they've already offered Ramirez two years at $45 million with an option year that could make the deal worth $60 million.

Yes....this rumor is true. The men have the money...while the other teams "pocket" the fans money and laugh behind their backs.....It's really funny. There is no recession.

The Dodgers are a joke-
if they are offering 45 mil for 2 years...
just bump up the offer to 50 or 55-
- don't be cheap- he hit 400 for you last year

It's a shame that there are so very few players who have loyalty to their teams. I miss the days when you had a ball player and they stayed most of their career with their team. The Red Sox had to do what they did with Manny, and he was embraced by L.A. He talked about how much he loved L.A. and the fans. All an act.
As far as the previous comment goes, you don't pay for what someone did you pay for what they will do. Manny is turning 39 now. 2 years is the maximum he should get on a contract and since when in 45 million cheap? He would get to play in decent weather the majority of the time, and he would have fans who already love him. But no, that's not enough. He's turning his back on the fans for the dollar.

Phil- stop with your 1950's view on sports.
It's a BUSINESS....PERIOD
- 99.9 % of athletes do the SAME THING-
they are a ballplayer- that's their trade.....
they try and get the MOST $$ while they can
players PLAY for their next contract.
- this has ALWAYS been the way it is
Manny is a TOOL- but he is STILL a top RH bat
and can hit 300, 35 hrs & 120 rbi in his SLEEP-
- if you keep his deal SHORT- he MAY keep his head
on straight to get another deal after the contract runs out

Manny is a good hitter, but he is disruptive to a team. The Yanks don't need him...go after Lowe and put Hughes in the bullpin as a long reliever.

Collusion should be reserved for players like this. Blackball him.

Most players up until the mid seventies stayed with a team because of the reserve clause and no free agency. But yeah, rooting for somebody who has shown himself to be nothing more then a go-to-the-highest-bidder-money-grubbing-**** is getting harder and harder and harder to do.

You are throwing the dice with Manny. I know that he would love to screw the Sox, so it might make sense just for that. But, where would he hit? Would he DH? Manny is a head case and he needs things to go his way or he will pout and sit. What would Yankee fans think if he faked an injury so that he wouldn't have to play the Sox?
It would be poetic justice for NO ONE to sign Manny. He quit. The poor boy was upset that he would have to play for only $20 Million. He is a pampered **** that needs a real dose of reality.

No way there is any collusion going on in baseball. The only reason Bonds, Clemens and Sosa didn't play last year was because they all could no longer produce at a level above a minor leaguer. Sure. And obviously Manny has lost so much of his abilities during the off season that no owner will take a chance on him. It has nothing to do with all those things he did in Boston to force a trade. Its tough when players get old. But clearly no collusion going on.

All four of the players you mentioned screwed themselves. There's nothing untoward going on. Nobody wanted the Clemens, Bond, or Sosa steroid headache. And nobody wants Manny when he's going to act like a four year old who was told he couldn't have the new toy he wanted.

Dont trade for Cameron (save $8-$10), Dont sign Pettitte ($10), trade Matsui (eat half the salary...saves $6)... $26 million. The money is there!

Man, FN will do ANYTHING to get "Yankees" and "Manny" into the same headline, huh?
And I've said for a long time...anytime FN ends a headline with a question mark, the answer is always "no".

Dear Cash-Man, pick up Manny and I will tune in, imagine Manny in pinstripes in Fenway, and the sellout at the new stadium. Manny is money, period. Texeria is just a nice bat and glove who like Jeter will be boring and just say all the right things. There is no bigger threat in the bottom of the ninth with the bases loaded and Manny up to bat. Just the fact, ma'm.

Yes, players used to be "loyal", but mainly because of the Reserve Clause as Wanted Man pointed out. Very few players -- even those many would call great t4eam players -- have chosen to remain with a team and accept less money. In fact, the greatest player of all time, Babe Ruth, would've left NY in a heartbeat to get the money and opportunity he felt he deserved if he could have. Even in this age of free agency, the owners still hold most of the power, if they choose to exercise it.
I'm not saying that Manny is blameless, but he's not the only devil here.
I wouldn't be upset if the Yankees signed him because he would make them one of the most potent hitting teams of all time. But there is a risk that he would become a disruption. I would sign him for 2 years max, with a club option 3rd year to hopefully keep him focused. I'd prefer the Yankees try to get a bona fide CF like McLouth, or a stud catcher. And I prefer signing Lowe or Sheets to allow Joba to go back to the BP where he belongs...eventually he will be the replacement for Mo.

The offer to Pettitte and the proposed trade for Cameron both came before the Yanks signed Tex. That money probably already went into the Tex deal. They might still be able to sign Manny, but I think that it would be a stretch, dollars wise. The Steinbrenners will have to make a final decision about Andy and then about Ramirez.
I, for one, am about done with Pettite and his act. More than that though, I would love to see the kids get a chance in spring training to compete for that fifth starter job. At least one of them will step up and the competition will sharpen all of them.
I've also changed my mind about Manny and would now like to see the Yanks sign him. Frankly, I think the Yanks could use some ManRam drama to stir things up, get some juice flowing and not be as boring as they've been with that corporate veneer they've had for awhile. What an offensive monster he is! Give him a short term contract loaded with incentives along with team options to help keep him in line. I'd try to sell Matsui to a Japanese team and then use Manny at DH.
