Miami coach faces tough issues

Miami football coach Randy Shannon didn't sleep during his team's red-eye flight home from San Francisco on Sunday morning, not after the Hurricanes dropped their third consecutive game to end their once promising season with a 7-6 record. Sleep deprived or not, when Shannon gets back on his feet he will have plenty of issues to deal with. There's the dilemma with quarterback Robert Marve, who is considering transferring. There is a coaching staff which could see changes. ''I'll take some time off this week before I go out recruiting, evaluate everything we've done,'' said Shannon, who added that he got through 2 ?? games of film on the way back from the Emerald Bowl. And during the next five weeks he will have to wrap up the 2009 recruiting class, one Shannon said is still sorely in need of offensive linemen.

The first thing the coach needs to do is work on clock management. Before the half and at the end of the game I thought Mangini was running the team.

The Canes that are still very young...what has changed over the past 4 weeks regarding that? nothing.....The Canes are still on the right track...inexperienced teams struggle,no matter how much young talent they might have

I noticed that, too. I couldn't believe that they had 3 timeouts at the end of the 1st half and let 30 seconds or so run off before a time out was called.

Look up the reason why they were suspended, not one was for nonacademic purposes, which is saying a lot more than most other schools who allow players to play with criminal charges pending or starting fights with frats. Look at the position of the players transfering (RB-James, Cooper, Chambers, 3 highly ranked commits for next year;WR-Miami signed 30 of them last year, who are all starting to excel). The coaching was horrible so no one can really justify that, Nix needs to be ousted and Shannon needs to take better notes from his mentor Jimmy Johnson.

objectively cal's pass offense was one the worst I've seen all year, only Auburn and Vandy were worse of the games I watched myself.

With that said UM's defense should of done better. That was as one sided an offenese as you will see and they still didn't stop them. So here is the million dollar question, is it the players or is it the coaches? I'd like to hear your opinions because it really seems to me the UM has some very bad coaches, starting with Randy.

i try not to comment too often, but im SUPER SICK OF GAYTOR FANS THAT MUST BE PUT IN THEIR PLACE!!!

9-4, 10-3, 10-2, 8-5, 8-5, 7-5, 9-3
are you going to BLAME the "then new" coach zook?

IM SUPER EXCITED about the U in the years to come!! - Imagine Harris as a Jr QB w/ his SICK RBs & Cheatah Speed WRs...the OL is commin!!

and for all the others who call MIAMI PLAYERS THUGS...WHO was the LAST "thug" who went to UM?
how many players from fsu or uf were suspended for anything this season or kicked off the team?
its DEF 10x MORE than UM.

as KATT WILLIAMS SAYS - haters arent born, they are made...if you have 10 ppl hating on you now, you NEED 50 more by the end of the month.

I feel you pain, buddy, but you picked the wrong year to trash talk Florida. I hate the Gators as much as the next decent, clean-living person but look who they get in the BCS national champ game, the biggest punching bag in the ncaa (next to Ohio State). Better luck next year.

December 29, 2008  02:13 PM ET

with respect to comment 11, was that in response to my comment 10? If it is you need counseling. My comment was in no way an attack but a comment that asked who is at fault the coaches or the players and you went off. Geez grow a pair.

December 29, 2008  02:19 PM ET

are you really going to say that you think UM's coaching performance for the last few years was at best adequate.

If you are too stupid to see it, I was trying to say that I don't think it was your players fault but rather the coaching. And I was seeing what others thought about the subject, but you feel you have to put me in my place for stating something without any smack whatsoever. you are a hypocrite. you constantly spew smack and someone makes a straight up comment and you have to put them in their place. consider this you being put in yours.

December 29, 2008  02:30 PM ET

Its looking like miami at least stole a DT recruit from Detroit in Will Campbell. Last one to leave Michigan, please turn out the light...we cant afford the electricity.

December 29, 2008  03:45 PM ET

How come nobody ever talks about Black head coaches being lousy at coaching? Seems like they get fired more often than have a winning record, and you get ONE success story from Turner Gil and you'd think he was the Black Bear Bryant. Give me a freakin break.

Can somebody hire a damn Filipino!!!!

Filipino rights now!!!

December 29, 2008  04:12 PM ET

I've been a huge canes fan for the last 30 years. While Randy Shannon is an AWFUL coach who seemingly can recruit, the Canes will go nowhere, regardless of the coach, as long as the twit named Donna Shallala is running the university. It starts at the top, and she's a nicumpoop of Biblical proportions. Like everything else in her empty vessel of a life, i'm sure she's thrilled with mediocrity. Like all communisists/socialists, I think she'd rather see every team around .500. Take it to the bank, until she's gone, the Canes will be nothing but mediocre.

December 29, 2008  04:16 PM ET

You're right, MJRobo, until the Canes go back to recruiting from the reform schools instead of the high schools, they won't be back to the Canes we all knew and feared.

December 29, 2008  04:17 PM ET

#11 what a dumba*s, forget Zook was only the coach for 3yrs. (02-04) you gave me 27 losses in you're cherry picked 7 seasons 99-05, so let's look at the lower case "u" for the past 7 seasons, 60-28 notice the steady decline (12-1, 11-2, 9-3, 9-3, 7-6, 5-7, 7-6) hum...must be the coaches. so that's uf 61-26 um 60-28 nice try. and just one more thing for you Shannon-Heads.

"Randy Shannon current head football coach of the University of Miami Hurricanes. He has led the Hurricanes to a 12-13 in his first two years as head coach. This is the lowest winning percentage (.480) for a Miami Hurricanes' head coach in 30 years since Lou Saban went 9-12 in his first two years as Hurricanes' head coach (1977-78'). -wikipedia.org-

Right on Troy of Chicago. But I don't care if the Canes recruit from Reform Schools, High Schools or Charm Schools, the team will be mediocre until that midget witch Shallala is drenched with water and disappears into the floor where her stubby little toes will shrivel up. Only then will they return to form as the Canes everyone fears and we will not have to put up with these uppitty, know nothing, foul breathed Gator heads.
