Jason Giambi is the A's next free-agent target, but there are others on Oakland's list, too. The Chronicle has learned that the team has had preliminary conversations about free-agent outfielders Bobby Abreu and Garret Anderson as possible options should Giambi stick firmly to his wish for a three-year deal. A's general manager Billy Beane has had brief contact with the agents for Abreu and Anderson. Both men are younger than designated hitter/first baseman Giambi, who will be 38 in January. Anderson is 36 and Abreu will be 35 in March. Anderson is a three-time All-Star and Abreu a two-time All-Star.

They were also looking at Nick Johnson. Giambi would be the best fit, though.

HE is be fine back in OAKLAND more then likely he will be an MVP again...

All players would make sense for the A's given their track record. Older guys on the downside of their careers, that could still produce. Probably wouldn't mind any of them at this point.

Never thought I would see the name Jason Giambi and slugger used in the same article again....Define slugger.

Oakland... pull it together. Trade with the Yankees for Damon and sign Giambi. Oh yeah, and since you dont have a SS, trade for Miggy.

Damon
Miggy
Holiday
Giambi

Giambi isn't get three years. The dude is older than Manny for the lovea Pete, and Manny ain't gettin three either. Both of them screwed themselves out of that possibility.

True... but Giambi would be 3 years $12 million where as Manny is 3 years $60

That's neither here nor there, 'cause like I said, neither one is getting three years.

Giambi would be a good fit in oakland considering they are the best at providing steriod use under the radar. Perhaps the giambi back to his old form?

December 29, 2008  01:01 PM ET

MVP? Are you kidding me? .250, 30hr, 80 rbi will never be MVP type numbers....

Gbambino is too one dimensional. He can only pull the ball. Pitch him outside and one of two things will happen. He will either walk or fly out. He has no glove, which makes him a liability. Let's face it, he is not the brightest ballball player for his position. If it were not for the designator hitter he would be through with ballball. Last year, yes he hit a lot of home runs, but still batted....what......245 or a hair higher. Not worth the price.
