Red Sox asked Marlins about Ramirez

The Red Sox made a play to re-acquire Marlins superstar Hanley Ramirez after losing out to the rival Yankees for star free agent Mark Teixeira, league sources tell SI.com. But while the Marlins listened to Boston's overtures, Florida isn't anxious to trade its best player, and talks apparently have been aborted after no agreement could be reached. The Marlins were said to be most interested in a center fielder, and discussions apparently centered on Boston's promising youngster Jacoby Ellsbury, talented pitching prospect Clay Buchholz and others in a package for Ramirez, who began in Boston's organization.

They asked for Jesus too? Wow, that is going WAY too far.

Ellsbury, Buchholz, and a couple A-ballers for Hanley Ramirez is reasonable. Ellsbury and Buchholz are likely to be solid MLB players for at least a decade, but neither is likely to be an All-Star or MVP candidate. Hanley Ramirez is the best hitting middle-infielder in baseball... and would become the best hitting CF in baseball if the Red Sox were to put him out there to use his speed better. The Marlins have every right to expect more than a servicable CF with upside and a solid #3 starter with upside for Hanley Ramirez. Me thinks you're having too much of the Red Sox Kool Aid.

Then again, Ramirez, for the last two seasons has been head and shoulders over all other shortstops offensively. Ellsbury hasn't exactly set the world on fire and Buchholz has got a 5.56 ERA in about 100 major league innings and looks like a young Herman Munster.

The nerve of the Marlins to be asking for a sort-of and a hasn't been for a financially controled player who provides incredible power from a position of Red Sox need.

Jacoby doesn't look like a young Herman Munster! He's cute! I got a good picture of him at Camden Yahds.

I guess I'd be willing to part with Buchholz, reluctantly ... but I'd really hate to see Jacoby go. He's young and has potential ... and he's nice to look at. ;)

It goes pretty good ... light dusting of snow this morning. I have to face the hordes at the grocery store I guess ... as it'll likely be worse tomorrow.

Hope all's well. I have to go scare the squirrel out of the bird feeder. BRB.

Why wouldn't you ask alot for your number 1 player. Plus Ellsbury and Buchholz haven't exactly torn in up yet. Great potential but I'd still rather have Ramirez then those 2.

I'm just a sentimental fool ... and I know that's not how you win.

agree....all he needs is that upside down triangle haircut on his forehead.

all this talk of Boston wanting to move Buchholz and Ellsbury (and possible other prospects) makes you really wonder how great that farm system is? If it was I doubt Boston would move any of these "sure thing" guys nor would they constatnly be shopping in Japan.

Just because a player can kick arse in A or AA (or even AAA) doesn't mean he can do it in the MLB. The Sox may be finding this out...

At least they don't suck like the Tigers do.

Oh, they inquired about him huh? This is ridiculous. Can we talk about anything but these boring wild card possible Ded Sox for once? My word get off it already. Are they interested in Albert Pujols too? Or maybe they are "considering a possible" trade for Ryan Howard for when Big Papi dips below .200 this year. None of the crap coming out of Boston makes sense and none of it is even possible. In other words, 3rd place baby.

Morning Tony. I think they are in the "please give us something this winter" mode. Send Manny back to them he is available still. Can't belive he hasn't accepted the Dodgers 45 mil offer.
