The Detroit Lions have been granted permission to interview Cowboys offense coordinator Jason Garrett for their head coaching vacancy, a source said. Detroit owner William Clay Ford fired coach Rod Marinelli on Monday after the club became the first team in NFL history to post an 0-16 record. Garrett interviewed with Baltimore and Atlanta last off-season when he was viewed as one of the hottest assistant coaches in the NFL. This was after the Cowboys put up some of the best offensive numbers in franchise history, including 455 points. Garrett is now being criticized for the team's offensive inconsistency in December. The Cowboys finished the regular season ranked 13th in the NFL with 344.5 yards per game and 18th with 362 points.

The Cowboys are gonna want Cowher.....

Lions also received permission to speak with Steve Spagnulo of the Giants and i would rather have him then Garrett. Or a miracle could happen and we could get Cowher lol.

I'm sure he's just the man to get the Motor City back rolling.........lol

It doesn't matter in the long run. The Lions are keeping the guys that they already have as team President and General Manager. They refuse to do anything big. They will not go and get a proven winner. The Lions will continue to be the worst franchise in the NFL as long as William Clay Ford owns the team.

True... If they wouldn't invest into the team before the recession, they surely won't during the recession....

the good news is, the lions are on rock bottom. any win at all next season, is a major victory for the franchise. low expectations 4tw.

Brian Billick was the sure thing yesterday... let the rumors fly, ultimately we will end up with some underachieving nobody whose name starts with M.

why would Garrett even consider going to a dump like Detriot? the dump in Dallas will soon be yours.

December 30, 2008  08:39 AM ET

The lions owner has already said his front office will return next year. This leads me believe he is a borderline retarded. EVERYBODY associated with this debacle of a team should be fired, or traded. The exceptions being their all world WR, a rookie QB isnt going to term around this franchise. The need a figure head to come in and fix this mess. Two words. Bill & Parcells. Nuff said

Perhaps Garrett loves the draft. Going to Detroit means he can help make not only Detroit's picks but also all of Dallas'.

Thanks again!

no kidding. its expensive to move! The NFL is really amazing. A team can look like a super bowl team in one week and then look like a team in rebuilding mode the next.

Wasn't Garrett the heir-apparent at the beginning of the season? Didn't Jones make it clear he would do anything not to lose him?

yes. and jones gave him the highest salary of an asst coach.

and this is exactly why you can't take what jones' says seriously. he could change his mind dramatically.

I would like to see how Garrett could run that offense without TO. It has to be difficult to have a game plan in place with the big crybaby constantly hounding you. sad thing is that jerry will fire the coaches but keep TO. Stupid move...I think most fans are sick of TO now. the boys have enouhg talent on offense and we don't need that jackarse anymore.

The bar has been set for them to go 0-0-16 and tie every game.

TO, TO, TO wah wah wah.

You people are incredible. You believe everything you see on ESPN. Did anyone notice TO wasn't complaining when he had 3 catches for 36 yards in a win over the NYG? No? That's because the end result is what TO wants - WINNING.

Think for yourselves for ONE SECOND and don't believe everything the Magic Box (television) is feeding you.

So you blame TO for Wade Phillips not having control of his team? A defense that can't tackle suddenly is TO's fault? Romo playing like a 4th stringer is TO? Im not a TO fan at all but the mess in Dallas is 100 percent on Phillips shoulders. Fire him and bring in Cowher or bring back Parcells. Heck, bring back Jimmy. A coach with control wins 12 games with the Cowboys easy.
