Fired Miami coach disagreed with Shannon

University of Miami offensive coordinator Patrick Nix was dismissed Monday after a season in which the Hurricanes finished 89th in the nation in total offense and had problems with clock management -- most recently in the Emerald Bowl. Nix, who spent two years on the job, said he wanted to run a more wide-open offense than coach Randy Shannon allowed. "I wanted to be a little bit more wide open -- no-huddle, spread out, go for it," Nix said. "And he wanted to be more two-back, conservative. It was a fine line in trying to balance the two. And not that one is better than the other, it's just a different philosophy. Both ways can win, just different philosophies.'' Several times this season, UM had problems with clock management at the end of the first half or at the end of games. Those problems resurfaced in Saturday's 24-17 loss in the Emerald Bowl on its final possession. TV cameras showed Shannon approaching Nix late in the game, but Nix not responding. Shannon then called a timeout with 12 seconds left, although the clock already was stopped.

I know I'll be crucified here by many for this but... please someone tell me the last time a white head coach was criticized as much as Shannon for making head-coaching decisions like these? Shannon is not the first Miami head coach to not win a National Championship, yet every move he makes is blown up by the experts. Is Shannon the first coach of a bowl game losing-team to dismiss assistant coaches, or take away some of their in-game decisions?
Please, if I am missing another Miami coach to take this much from the critics, please add a comment here.

Shannon's first year as UM head coach was one of the worst in the Hurricanes' modern history, with the team registering a losing record (5-7) including losses to unranked teams. Under Shannon, the team failed to reach a bowl game for the first time in a decade. It was the first non-penalized full-scholarship team to miss a bowl game in more than 25 years.
Shannon's 2008 team was fueled by many freshmen, after Miami brought in what was considered one of the top recruiting classes of 2008. The Hurricanes finished the 2008 regular season at 7-5. So I think the criticism is justified.

definitely, NO other coaches get criticized.

Off the top of my head, Mark Richt has been called out a lot over the fact that he won't cut ties with Willie Martinez.

Come on man, that took me about 5 seconds to do.

JoePa being called out for not even really being a head coach.
Bobby Bowden called out for not moving aside so Jimbo Fisher can take his rightful spot as HC.

Has Chizik hired an OC yet? Here's his chance.

Folks, thanks for responding to my comment to start this all and I do see where most of you are coming from and I do believe BUCKGUY's comment really weakens my claim. Thanks for that info BUCKGUY. I do believe Weis and Rodriguez deserved far more abuse than they have taken (and as I see it Shannon has taken more than those two complete failures have).

Perhaps part of my problem/maybe even misperception is how fannation and the T&R section has presented this all lately. It seems like the people at fannation who pick and choose T&Rs miss a lot (like some of the coaches mentioned above) and focus on the stuff being written about others like Shannon on a daily basis. Maybe my first comment should have been more about fannation's treatment about Shannon instead of the sports media in general.

Whatever the case, thanks all for responding to my comment and not killing me overall.

His #1 recruiting class kids were just true freshman this yr.....not everybody is an Adrian Peterson...let the kids develop and get experience..Nix needed to go

Lets see how many comments the Gator fans cant post about this...They all come out whenever they have a chance to bash the Canes

December 30, 2008  10:39 AM ET

no bashing, he did what he had to do, now he better start winning now or else it will be him who is let go next. From what I've been reading Nix basically said that Randy wouldn't let him run the offense like he wanted. Hope Randy learns from his mistakes or else he is going to shackle the next OC again. The point is to hire someone you agree with and trust them to run the offense not someone you don't agree with and have them run it the way you want. just a thought.

I agree....I dont know who is telling the truth, but I wish Miami would open it up a bit more...

Ya know I don't know what skin color you are and I don't care. I don't care what skin color a football coach has. It's people like you and the press that just won't let this race thing die. How does it feel to be the first this or the first that because your skin color is different bla bla bla bla bla. GET OVER IT! I'm not what you might think I am so don't tell me I don't know how it feels. YOU make your life what you want it to be. If you want to dwell on all this BS then your life will be nothing but dwelling on the BS and your life will be miserable.
