Source: Pro Bowl abandoning Honolulu

The Pro Bowl will abandon Honolulu for Miami Gardens in 2010, kicking off one week before the Super Bowl arrives at Dolphin Stadium, according to a source involved in the decision and local Super Bowl organizers. The anticipated move is seen as a bid to revive interest in the NFL's annual all-star game, whose timing and remote location make it harder to attract fans, sports writers and even players. The 2010 plan would launch a new NFL tradition of playing the Pro Bowl in the same city as the Super Bowl. It also would end the NFL's policy of holding the Pro Bowl the week after the Super Bowl, a practice that makes professional football the only major sport that plays its all-star game after the season ends. While league officials would not confirm the decision Monday night, South Florida's Super Bowl organizers said they've been told to prepare for a 2010 Pro Bowl in Dolphin Stadium.

QUOTE(#2):

What about the players that have to play in the superbowl ??? Will the coaches take the chance of letting the superbowl players paticipate in an all star game the week before the biggest game of the season...

It would give opportunity to watch some football on the weekend prior to the SuperBowl...

December 30, 2008  07:42 AM ET

They never said what week they would hold he Pro bowl in... I just don't think the season is long enough to hold the Pro-bowl half way thru like the NBA... They should just get rid of the game all together, but have Pro-bowl weekend and hold the skills competitions and other crap three quarters of the way thru. The NFL is just a different animal with injury risks and all... it just won't work out.

December 30, 2008  07:47 AM ET

the nfl abandoned the pro bowl a long time ago. perhaps they should just make it a bikini clad game with cheerleaders from each squad representing their teams. i might tune in for that flag football feast.

but the current flag football pro bowl with only some of the stars even bothering to show up has bored me for a decade plus.

They want to keep it this way so the players don't get hurt. The players Assoc gets money from this so they want to keep it going. I wonder if the move to Miami is not a cost cutting move.

December 30, 2008  08:40 AM ET

why are they still insisting on playing this meaningless game?

December 30, 2008  09:41 AM ET

Pro Bowl should change to "All-Pro" or "All-NFL" and they should just name players like the All-NBA 1st Team and 2nd Team.

Or, they should get out there and just play football.

December 30, 2008  10:23 AM ET

I know the players are worried about getting hurt but it's the fans that pay your salary.

I like the way AP went out and played hard last year!

December 30, 2008  11:43 AM ET

Stupid idea...players from SB teams will not and should not play. Players don't care, the fans don't care, so why bother with it. Might as well bring back the "Playoff Bowl" instead, where the losers of the AFC/NFC Championship games play each other.

December 30, 2008  11:57 AM ET

Out of sight ... out of mind! Don't get me wrong! Honolulu is nice but .... it is kinda out of sigh!

Yes they did. 1st line of the article...

Nobody cares about the game because it's not a real football game. Nothing will revive interest.
The real question is will this game sell more tickets than the VT-Cincy Orange Bowl this year?

December 30, 2008  01:10 PM ET

Its a bad move if they play the Pro Bowl a week before the Super Bowl. No coaches of the Super Bowl teams are going to want their player in the Pro Bowl the week before the big game. Instead of wtng two weeks after the Championship games, play the Superbowl the week after.

Then have your Pro Bowl

December 30, 2008  02:27 PM ET

Probably one of the more idiotic ideas I've seen in years. An all-star game, but missing the best players on the two best teams (the AP story said the game will not include any players from the Super Bowl teams)? Add to that taking away the free trip to Hawaii, which will cause more players to take a pass on the game, and you're looking at a game with less than zero appeal. They'd be better off resurrecting the old Playoff Bowl, which would pit the two conference championship losers against each other. At least the quality of play would be half-decent.

Plus, remember the last time the Super Bowl was in Miami? It rained like crazy and the field took a real beating. If that happens at the Pro Bowl next year will the league be able to repair or replace the field in time? Doubtful.

Really bad idea. Kill the game completely and have a 7 on 7 competition. That would at least be interesting to watch.

December 30, 2008  02:48 PM ET

All this is really going to accomplish is giving the grounds crews less time to get their fields in tip-top shape for the Superbowl.

December 30, 2008  04:20 PM ET

It's been confirmed. SI reported today that the Pro Bowl is officially moving to Miami and will be played the week before the Super Bowl. What a revoltin' development.

I never understood how other sports handle their all-star games. All star players should be selected after the season is over and all the stats have been tallied. Selecting all-star players halfway through the year is absolutely ignorant.

In regards to ratings, I might be more inclined to watch the Pro Bowl if it's during the bye-week before the Super Bowl. I'm always football hungry during that week. I'd probably watch any crap they put on TV... even the Pro Bowl (which I generally avoid).

December 30, 2008  08:56 PM ET

They shouldn't move the time it is played. You really don't want a player going to the Super Bowl put out with a bad injury in the pro bowl game.
