06:28 AM ET 12.30 | Rangers prospect Alexei Cherepanov took performance-enhancing drugs for months before his sudden death during a game in Russia, federal investigators said Monday in Moscow. Analysis of blood and urine samples in the wake of Cherepanov's Oct. 13 death during a Continental Hockey League (KHL) game revealed the presence of illicit substances, according to a statement from the Russian federal Investigative Committee. A committee spokesman in Moscow would give no further details of what substances were found. "(In) the blood and urine of Alexei Cherepanov traces of alcohol and drugs were found, but the chemical analysis suggests that for a few months he had been doping," Vladimir Markin, a spokesman for the Investigative Committee, told the Russian news service Vesti. The committee also said that Cherepanov suffered from myocarditis, a condition in which not enough blood travels to the heart and one Markin said Cherepanov had carried for roughly a year prior to his death. It said Cherepanov should not have been playing professional hockey, and that the team's medical staff may face legal ramifications.

Ya think? Might be something that someone should have known.
Dosen't hockey have the Strictest drug policy?

How nice of them! And, how typical Russian! Blame the dead! Throw as much mud as possible on the poor, unfortunate kid! After all, the dead can't talk and defend themselves and, who can possibly challenge the "expert opinion" uttered by the omnipotent, authoritarian Feds?

And they expect us to believe this garbage? This is nothing but pure Russian style spin to deflect attention from the real issue here: Gross negligence and total incompetence on the part of the KHL and it's medical staff (or lack thereoff)! The bottom line is they didn't have the necessary emergency equipment and/or personel on hand to save his life! This kid shouldn't have died! Not like that!

must the same guys the Russians used to "investigate" their Olympic athletes in the 70s and 80s

KGB will make sure this goes away.

Like they did the Kursk sumarine nedless tragedy and like they do with every other screwup over there! They even tried it with Chernobyl but .... it got too "hot" even for them to handle!

Why is the team being held accountable when this IDIOT kid was taking steroids! The kid killed him self plain and simple. He probably would have never died of that condition if he wouldn't have been shooting up with horse testosterone!

The team is being held accountable because it reportedly took 12 minutes for team doctors to arrive and when they did, they brought a defibrilator that had a dead battery.

IF true, this doping would certainly be a contributing factor, however it wouldn't excuse the lack of a proper first response.

December 30, 2008  01:53 PM ET

Blame should be around to all on this.
KHL for a suspect testing policy (if they test at all).
Team for not having medical staff 5 seconds off the ice.
Player for taking said drugs (may be BS, may not).

December 30, 2008  02:06 PM ET

This takes some of the blame away from the team, but the fact that their equipment in the facility was either non-existent or not working means that they are still somewhat liable.

December 30, 2008  03:19 PM ET

I heard blood doping was what he was doing. And I thought blood doping was when you remove blood, condense it to red blood cells only and inject those back giving increased oxygen carrying ability.

But nothing would surprise me.

December 30, 2008  06:12 PM ET

The book "King of Russia" opened my eyes about the Russian hockey life as I was interested about it. According to Don King a former NHL coach and the first Canadian to coach in Russia, the team doctors would hand out pills to the players after practice or before or whenever and they would just down those pills. They weren't told what they were, they just took them. No questions asked.

"IDIOT kid?" What's wrong with you? Are you working for them? Why are you assuming he was using steroids? You are as bad as they are for indicting the poor kid on their say so!

The term being used is "doping" which is the common term for "blood doping." The practice was developed by the Soviets in the 60s and 70s to cheat at the Olympics. The concept is very simple: You draw some of your own blood and freeze it for future use. Then you inject it back into your system before competition. More blood in your system means more oxygen and nutrients to your muscles, which means better performance and endurance. It is virtually undetectable and ... it works, provided your heart is good!

Cherepanov's heart was weak. Very likely he was taking meds for his condition. Since (curiously and suspiciously) they didn't say what "drugs" were found in his system, let's not assume it was steroids or some other bad stuff! It is quite possible that a combination of a weak heart, meds and blood doping caused heart failure.

The point that's been lost here is that he didn't have to die if help was readily available! That's the issue that's been muddied with innuendo and by purposely keeping certain details out of the report! Wise up!

December 31, 2008  12:07 AM ET

Blood doping is a relatively harmless (unless you have a heart condition.
It's also usually undetectable. Since blood doping involves re-injecting your own, it doesn't show up on a conentional blood test or even an advanced toxicology screen.
Therefore it's pretty easy to accuse someone of it since there is usually no conclusive proof one way or the other.

Typical Russian investigation. The kid may or may not have done a little blood doping. But they are now trying to make the guy sound like Ivan Drago from Rocky III in order to deflect blame away from the other facts in the case.

Regardless of what this kid was taking if the alleged doctors knew about it (which apparently they did) they should have STOPPED it!

Another damn sad story in pro sports. And another bunch of doctors trying to deflect the blame.
