Pirates among finalists for Turnbow

The Pirates are one of three finalists in a freshly pared-down field of suitors for free-agent reliever Derrick Turnbow, a source said yesterday. The source described the Pirates as "very much still in the mix" but declined to divulge if they had offered a major league contract or any other specifics. The other two suitors are not known, either, although varying reports have linked Turnbow to the San Francisco Giants, Florida Marlins, Philadelphia Phillies, Detroit Tigers, Texas Rangers and Tampa Bay Rays.

Where is Omar & the METS???? Omar dont relax yet your job is not done. Earn your $$$$ and get another quality starter.

The Bucs wanting to improve? What's going on here?

December 30, 2008  08:02 AM ET

The Pirates singing Turnbow is the eqivalent of the captain of the Titanic requisitioning additional life boats for their next outing. The Pirates are going to be a 60-65 win team in 2009 unless they sell to an owner with deeper pockets and get a better scouting department. Signing Turnbow might make 1-2 games difference over the course of a season, but it does nothing to help their rotation, their AAA bench, or their overall lack of offensive cohesion. When the Pirates can make an offer on 2nd-tier starters like Garland and Wolf, I'll get excited about Pirates baseball again. When Jim Leyland, Bobby Bonilla, and Barry Bonds left Pittsburgh, so did their ability to win. Turnbow is a gesture, and nothing more.

Is Turnbow really an improvement?

December 30, 2008  08:24 AM ET

Compared to what they had before, yep. He had a few good seasons not to long ago.

Your photo seems to indicate that you may be a bit delusional... pretty sure no Penguin touched the cup this past year...

This story is only interesting if they reveal who the other two teams are. And at the end of the day, Turnbow is nothing more than a low-cost gamble.

I'm hopefull, that's not a bad thing is it? LOL

Might need those life rafts because seems like everyone is bailing on the Brewers

No, I know how you feel, I root for the Tigers... and Lions...

OK so this is not going to make or break the Pirates by any means but it is a somewhat good sign. Over the past 10 years or so, we have seen the Pirates have been unable to sign any big agents. Same story here this offseason; usually though, the Buccos will just use whatever leftovers they have from the prior year and AAA to slot into their bullpen (which is usually dismal). Good to sign a quality reliever who can ocassionally find the strikezone.

Yeah, losses. Derek Turnbow? Are you serious? He sucks.

Tigers have hope, Lions....not so.

Non-news here... a blown-up reliever headed to a lousy team.

December 30, 2008  11:51 AM ET

Ask any Brewers fan if they think Turnbow is an upgrade for any team.

Agreed. Lets put Turnbow in perspective. He was cut by the Brewers. The only team with a worse bullpen than the Mets. The Mets then looked at Turnbow and decided he couldnt help them. Think about that statement.. The METS had better options in their own 'pen than Turnbow. That comment alone should make people avoid him.

Way to make a big splash this offseason Pirates! How about trading Nate McLouth for Melky Cabrera, Ian Kennedy, and a 3rd roung draft pick?

He's not a Latin reliever so Omar will not pay him any attention. Only reason they got Putz was to fill the quota of white players.

the red sox need to sign this guy. He is the real deal!!! His heater is off the charts.

Ya, and his ball location is off the map - literally...

Hey cubsfanil, the crew sent him to the minors, and they're definitely not trying to keep him. But hey, a choke is a choke, and if I were a cubs fan i'd fabricate crap about the oppenents too if it made me feel better.

Crew fans call him turdblow for a reason. Sure he had one semi-decent year, several years ago. But since then he has been terrible. I cannot believe there are any teams interested in this guy. Great arm, but no location. None....
