Giants' Spagnuolo in heavy demand

With three firings around the NFL yesterday, Steve Spagnuolo is in demand. The winless Lions fired Rod Marinelli and have asked for and received permission to interview Spagnuolo. The Browns, who canned general manager Phil Savage and coach Romeo Crennel, have expressed interest in speaking with Spagnuolo. The Rams are expected to become involved. The Jets, who fired Eric Mangini, reportedly have asked permission to talk with Spagnuolo. Spagnuolo is not the only one in demand on Tom Coughlin's staff. The Raiders plan to ask permission to speak with offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride, although interim coach Tom Cable has a solid chance to be hired by mercurial owner Al Davis.

Too bad all the suckey teams are on his list...

Good luck in the AFC Steve. You've earned it.

Maybe has something to do with the fact that good teams already have good coaches? I don't know though, its a tough mystery to figure out.

Wouldn't mind this guy in the Honolulu blue and silver.

Leave our Giant coaches alone. Mangini to Oakland is better. I wonder if Al Davis would take a Coach who go beat by Oakland this season.

December 30, 2008  08:53 AM ET

The Rams and Raiders are in an interesting position because unlike the other teams looking for head coaches, they have decent options (Haslett and Cable) already in place as "interim" coaches. So if the right guy doesn't come along, then they can always fall back on the guy that's already in place. I betcha that comes into play at the bargaining table.

LEAVE STEVE ALONE!

Please stop meesing with my Giants. Leave my coaching stuff along go find your own coaches please.

December 30, 2008  09:42 AM ET

Wish Jerry would throw some money at him.

It is the price of success. Hated it in the 80s and 90s, hate it now. It is the way of things. He will do well wherever he goes. And Reese and Coughlin will continue to do well too...The choice will be his, there will be a number of teams with him as their first choice..

No point in Spags going to a bad team with bad personnel. You end up making some money, get canned in 3 years, and go back to being a Def Coord somewhere else.

Who is going to want to coach Detroit or Cleveland? Or maybe Cincy or KC?

You are still young. Coughlin won't sign another deal with the Giants and might not work the final 3 years. The job is his if he wants it.

And I bet that about this time last year you would have given that same advice to Tony Sparano (who went from being Asst Head Coach with the 13-3 Cowboys to head coach in Miami) and Mike Smith (who went from being Defensive Coordinator with the 11-5 Jaguars to head coach in Atlanta).

That's a bad picture Spags. I know I should'nt talk....my picture is pretty bad as well.

December 30, 2008  01:45 PM ET

From: Mike Nolan, Rivera, and them other former/good def coor. who are currently jobless or serving as coor. again.
Spags please stay. Don't listen to any offers, the NY gig is yours to take . Learn a few more years with Mr. Coughling and then you will have you dream job, with a defense you have in please listen to us...you bleed blue and you is Italian so stay with them Jints!!!

NOPE! He wouldn't hire him over Cable who won the game. But he (Al) will probably keep Cable.

PERFECT guy for the Denver job.

Pick up the phone Bowlen and give Spags what he wants. Imagine what Cutler and Marshall could do with a freakin' DEFENSE!!!!

I agree. Denver's offense with a Jim Johnson-style defense... sick!

Denver is by far the best coaching vacancy available. You get a rising-star QB, an owner with years of patience, and four easy division wins a year (Chiefs & Raiders).

Yea, cause normally it is the Superbowl teams that are looking to replace the coaches! FEEL the sarcasm!!
