Mets don't want Andruw Jones

There's probably a better chance of Cleon Jones playing for the Mets next season than Andruw Jones. Although an ESPN report last night indicated the Mets and Dodgers were in trade discussions that could potentially make Jones the Mets' new right fielder, a person familiar with the situation said it won't happen. Jones' name was mentioned to Mets GM Omar Minaya several weeks ago, but the discussions never intensified. Jones, the biggest bust in baseball not named Barry Zito, is due $15 million in 2009 after batting .158 with three homers and 14 RBIs last season.

Darn, I was hoping the mutts would get another overpaid has been on their team. They have so many, why wouldn't they do this?

What happened to this guy? 3 years ago I thought he was on his way to being a lock for the hall of fame. Now I doubt he'll be playing in the majors 2 years from now.

Perfect candidate for the old steriod discussion.

agreed with his power numbers... don't think the juice would have that much of an impact on his average...

December 30, 2008  08:46 AM ET

I could see the HR's dropping from not using steroids, but the drop in average is what I find hard to believe. A lot of pitchers put up a better average than this guy last year.

Mrs. Jones doesnt want Andruw either.

Who exactly is an overpaid has been other than Castillo? As I recall, Jamie Moyer is 47 or so.

Moyer won 16 games last year and has the same number of wins in the last 4 years as Derek Lowe, who is so highly touted out in the FA market.

As for your other question: Luis Castillo, Moises Alou, Carlos Delgado, Pedro Martinez, Fernando Tatis. Any more you want me to name?

December 30, 2008  09:37 AM ET

And here I thought this article was about Cleon's comeback. He's only 66, you know.

Fernando Tatis is 33, a part time player and had better numbers in a part time role than your Matt Stairs and Geoff Jenkins.

Alou and Pedro are gone. Which leaves Delgado who had MVP consideration if not for Ryan Howard. Would you call him washed up?

So please, keep naming a few more. I'm interested in hearing this.

By the way, Lowe is 11 years younger than Moyer.

You phils fans want to brag about the title, go for it but the old, aging bit about the Mets roster isnt fact right now.

December 30, 2008  09:54 AM ET

Huh......hard to figure why anyone wouldn't want a .158 hitter that makes $15 million......

it's not the juice...

It's just being happy with the fat contract, unable to say no to the buffet lines and developing a serious allery to the gym.

Have you seen his wife? I'm pretty sure if I got a fat contract like he did, I'd stay home quite a bit.

His contract is 22 mill this year?? I'd think thats if he hit incentives which are obviously out of reach. If not, this might be the worst contract of all time.
