Cowher eyeing Jets job

We're hearing Bill Cowher is interested in the Jets, but he wants total control and the ability to put his own football management team in place. As of late last night, however, the Jets had not yet contacted him. But if the presence of GM Mike Tannenbaum is the impediment to Cowher taking the job, then owner Woody Johnson has no choice: He must fire the other half of his Boy Blunders.

This just in..... It apparently seems Bill Cowher is now interested in the Jets job.....stay tuned for further details.

December 30, 2008  07:32 AM ET

oh, if so.... Bye Brett.

Well, the can't do any worse... Why not take a chance...

Why would Bill want to leave the easy analyst job he has? Plus the Browns would have given him all this plus the kitchen sink to coach in Cleveland. Cowher is this years Bill Parcells as far as media speculation of "Where will he go?" I bet he goes nowhere.

bunk.

"Whaaa! I want him to coach my team!!"

Cowher was not going to go to another AFC North team. The potential downside was too great. If he goes to a team like the Jets and eventually fails, it would not hurt as much as if he were to do poorly in the AFC North. Failing in the North would kinda say that the success in the 'Burgh was not 100% his. Failing in another division, or better yet, in the NFC would not tarnish his reputation. I think he really wants total control of a team, so that leaves out teams like Dallas and Washington. The Jets would seem to be a good fit, but why deal with the stress of coaching when you can be an analyst?

I'm a Bills fan check the profile and I could care less if he went to Cleveland. I just think Cleveland is more desperate than the Jets and would have given him the keys to the city.

(1) what? how can you be the longest tenured head coach in the NFL and have 1 doubt (or doubter) about who is responsible for the teams success.

if you really want to explore the idea of Cowher avoiding the AFC North, its probably a safe bet that Bill wouldn't want to hurt the Steelers fans or franchise. And would choose to avoid working for a divisional rival because of that.

Nobody is doubting that Bill played a large part in the Steelers success during his time there.

(2) would have to agree Cowher is looking for a parcells type deal. that gives bill control over anything and everything he chooses to control. still wonder what happens if carolina or the cowboys call bill with a blank check and offer of full control. aside from that, doubt the chin un-retires in 2009.

Just saying that right or wrong, that's how it is. Owners and fans of other franchises are not like the Steeler ownership/fans, which will stick by their coaches when having bad seasons.

I love Bill, and as a Steeler fan, thank him for his work there, and hope he does well with whatever he wants to do. Just don't think he will ever go to the AFC North again.

Cowher isn't going to leave his cozy studio job, to stand on the sidelines in New York and freeze his butt off.

If he goes to the Jets he has a better chance for a quick turnaround. I'm sure the Jets not playing the Steelers next year helps a little unless they make the playoffs. They need a solid coach again cause everything since Parcells has had EPIC FAIL written all over it. I say give him what he asks and give Tannenbaum the boot. We obviously couldnt do any worse but then again we find interesting ways to have a bad season...

December 30, 2008  08:28 AM ET

If true, a dumb move. I don't believe it, but stranger things have happened.
