The Browns are one of three teams, along with the Jets and Detroit Lions, that have asked for and received permission to interview Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, who is on a playoff bye week. Spagnuolo will talk to the Jets on Saturday and may do all three interviews the same day.

who do the giants have in mind to replace him at def coordinator? He is one of the most aggressive def coordinators in the league but i think he takes great advantage of the end postions in tuck/umenyiora in that 4-3 set, no idea who the giants willg et to replace cuz he is 100% gone. Good for him, and if God is merciful he WON'T let the lions hire him lol.

How about none of the above?

I am a huge Giants fan, I live breathe eat Giants football, but it would be tough and I would be surprised if he doesn't take one of these head coaching opportunities. It's just part of the business, more money, more challenge, and an opportunity to prove to himself and his family and everyone that he has what it takes. From a professional/career standpoint I don't think anyone could turn down such an opportunity.

You are right. If he had no interest, then he would not be doing the interviews. It is not to get more money from the Giants, he got that last year...He will be missed, but he will be replaced..Give the players some credit, he could only be successful because of their talents and versatility. When he takes a HC job, I am more worried about who from the present Giant staff he wants to take with him...I hope the Giants keep all of their position coaches, they are the biggest reason why the Giants have been successful the last few years. They teach players how to be better...

I think the giants can handle losing spags, it'll be a tough adjustment, but i think if they get someone within the organization who knows the personell and schemes to run them similarly to how spags did we'll be ok. What the giants can't handle is if they lose both spags and gilbride to HC jobs, that would be horrendous.

December 31, 2008  10:56 AM ET

Forget about the Browns or the Lions! There are bigger fish for him to fry out there now! But .... stranger things have happened!

I agree. Filling both the OC and DC jobs is tough. Coughlin has a huge network of connections after all these years, and I am sure he has someone in mind. It could even be Chris Palmer, the QB coach that has helped Eli Manning and Carr so much...The jobs may go to some fired HC. Crennel is an excellent DC ( usually 3-4 defenses though), and a long time Giant connection. There are some very good OC out there that just got fired as HC this year.....Reese is a very bright man, I think they have already assumed both will go and have a plan in place. They expected to lose Spagnuola last year. It will be one week to from when he leaves to a new DC being named...Gilbride would be crazy to go to the Raiders, but he does have a West coach connection...

I have a serious question for all of you. The Browns have already begun interviewing head coaches even though they haven't agreed to terms with a General Manager. Wouldn't you want control of picking the head coach if you are to be their next G.M.? It sounds like whoever goes to Cleveland will have this owner dictating a lot of things? I would think of that as being a negative when considering Cleveland as a possible destination for a top candidate. Is the Browns owner putting the cart before the horse? Will his decision to interview coaches without the help of his future G.M. cause a top candidate to go elsewhere?

Also, one more observation... There seems to be a lot of news leaks coming from the Browns organization. I haven't seen this much news distributed from any of the other cities currently hiring with the possible exception of the Jets media. Are the Browns (and Jets for that matter) setting themselves up for a major letdown by leaking who they are interviewing next and possibly interested in? I mean, tell me that the Browns and Jet fans weren't disappointed to find out Cowher doesn't want to coach their teams. Now what happens if Cowher ends up in say... Denver and the Browns settle for Marty Schottenheimr as GM (because Pioli wasn't interested) and Brian Schottenheimer as their new HC because Mangini took more money in St. Louis? Obviously, the Browns wouldn't be making the type of splash they were hoping to when they fired Dumb and Dumber. Doesn't it behoove the ownership and front office people to keep their mouths shut on their possible personnel decisions? That's just an outsiders take. What do you guys think?
