Elway in line for Broncos job?

When Pat Bowlen fired Dan Reeves as Broncos head coach following the 1992 season, it set the stage for the return of Mike Shanahan to the organization, although it took two years to happen. When Bowlen fired Shanahan on Tuesday, it set the stage for the return of John Elway to the organization, and it could happen a lot sooner than Shanahan's did. A couple of caveats: First, this is based on no inside information, only my observation of the dynamics among these three men over the past several years. Second, just how much responsibility Bowlen is ready to give Elway I'm not sure. They were partners, along with E. Stanley Kroenke, in ownership of the Colorado Crush of the Arena Football League, which recently suspended operations. Elway had all the executive authority, so Bowlen has some experience dealing with him in that role. Elway has given no indication he wants to coach; quite the opposite. He has been preparing to be an NFL executive for some years now.

Has Elway ever been a coach (assistant or head) ever? This is reaching for a story at its finest.

He's not going to replace Shanny as coach but he may become the GM or director of football operations.

Well since Elway isn't going to have much to do this coming year since the AFL is a bust.. i would say he needs to do something??? i don't think he will be coaching thou

"He has been preparing to be an NFL executive for some years now."

I wonder how that works. I have been preparing to be a millionaire for some years now. Still waiting.

December 31, 2008  08:34 AM ET

Well, this is a stretch beyond words, but the Broncos are going to owe Shannahan like 20 million over the next 3 years and they have to pay it. So I don't look for them to spend a lot of money on a big name coach at least not yet..

It's definitley food for thought. The fans would love it for sure.

The author admitted that he was just throwing it out there!

Elway woudn't return as a coach. He'd come back as an executive of personnel or operations.

December 31, 2008  08:44 AM ET

Elway's no coach and owner would not be that stupid....

Well, an owner did fire Shannahan..

If it was the personell issues like ownership says it was, then why not just remove him from those duties? Why would you fire the guy with so much $$ tied up in him that that may just prevent you from bringing in a big name.

Why not have just gotten another DC in there? Defense was their main problem.
Makes no sense

A great player DOES NOT MEAN a great coach, and in fact usually means the opposite unless they are just one of those freaks of nature that can convey the way they played to coaching. Of course Mike Singletary is in SanFran, was a great player and just may turn that franchise around.

Elway in line for Broncos job? That doesn't make sense...

Thank you.

Also, does he have a big dome or what? I bet he knows what I'm thinking.

December 31, 2008  09:07 AM ET

This is just more Denver Cult-of-Elway stuff for selling papers, nothing to see here...

December 31, 2008  09:27 AM ET

Give the coaching job to either TO or Jerry Jones. That will get some publicity for the Broncos.

December 31, 2008  09:37 AM ET

Johns Legacy is a player and should stay that way!!

Wow - And the media will drive this rumor. WOW! It would not surprise me in the least. WOW!
