Report: Mets low-ball Lowe
The Mets are moving along negotiations with Derek Lowe, reportedly with a three-year offer in the $36 million range for the free-agent pitcher. That isn't nearly in line with the four-or five-year deal at around $15 million per season that Lowe's agent, Scott Boras, has been seeking, but then the Mets already have nabbed Francisco Rodriguez at a discounted rate amid this winter's recession.

I think that is a fair offer for him. Is there anyone else who has offered him even that much?

I'd love to see the Nats take some of that Texiera money and put it towards pitching. If any team could use a top of the rotation arm, it's Washington. Instead they'll cobble together a mediocre staff of has-beens, never-weres, and never-will-bes and point to their failed run at Texiera (and possible acquisition of Adam Dunn) as evidence of the Lerners' commitment to building a winner.

Boston never even gave him an offer. T&R also reported that Tex was on lock for the red sox and Cowher actually was eying (which they miss spelled by the way) the jets job despite saying I don't want to coach in 09.

12 million a year? Low ball? Prices for above average starters has gone beyond ridiculous. He not only wants stupid money but he wants four or five years? Let him walk.

This is why you need to secure the services of a professional in matters like these. I haven't low-balled anyone since 1991, and that time I was drunk.

top of the rotation arm ???
you know the article is about Lowe, right ?
he is a 3 or 4 th starter. Not a 1 or 2
he is an innings eater
He can 'demand' whatever he wants- the Mets offer is a
decent one- if they have to go to 13 per I'd do it - only because
the mets need to fortify the rotation & they can afford it.

Mets need a starter so not sure why they are low balling offers here. This isn't like the K Rod situation where they had a few alternative options and plans to go to. Lowe right now is the best option out there unless a team wants to take a chance on Sheets (Pavano the 2nd). Mets need to step up their game or they are going to have a rotation of Santana, Maine and 3 AAA pitchers.

Thank you for pointing this out. Everyone is acting like Lowe is Sabathia or Santana..the guy is average and way overpriced. That's what playing Boston and NYC gets you, an inflated sense of reality.

Lowe is a 1 or 2 starter.... in the NL West. Put him in a real division and he is a 3 or 4. He does eat innings though which the Mets will need if they are going to have 2 young pitchers in there who both may be on innings limits. Don't want to tax the bullpen too much and risk another repeat of 2008 do they.

People forget the reason he left the Sox a few years back was because he had an era close to 5. This guy is not that good. He cannot be more than a #4 starter on an AL team and even for an NL team he is no more than a solid #3 who can give you a lot of innings ad give the pen a rest.

Honestly, let him go to the Nats or Orioles, or some batcrap insane team who is willing to pay him $16 million per. He can go there, and he can lose until he turns 40. Or of course he can play there a year and get traded when he makes noise with said crappy team.
The Mets aren't "lowballing" him. It's a constant misconception about this team. They won't overpay and blow their load like the Yankees, hence they are cheap. With the 2nd or 3rd highest payroll in baseball, they aren't cheap. Lowe isn't worth 3 years and $48 million, and everyone knows it.

"not sure why they are lowballing offers here."
Why is this considered "lowballing." Boras is the one who set this price. Other players' prices are set BY the market. Not by 1 man. And it should be telling that nobody with a brain is offering him his 'price', so to speak.
Also, how exactly is Pelfrey a AAA starter? You're from SI like I am...so did you ever watch the Mets?

Can we also keep in mind that it's still NOT January yet. Traditionally, the premium FA's go to their new teams around Christmas. January is the time where teams get serious and move on to stockpile their rotations, benches, & bullpens. The fact that the Mets have their 1 thru 3 set is fine with me, as they'll replenish as they see fit.

Yeah, OK. It's not $15 million a year, it's $12 million a year.

I moved to Staten Island a year ago but before that I lived in Queens for 23 years. I've seen a lot of Mets games. Pelfrey had a lackluster first 2 seasons before posting a good one in 2008. I want to see how he performs in spring and the first 2 months before I give him his full due though. My only point is the Mets lose Pedro and Perez and have not signed or traded for anyone to take their spots. Yes Lowe is overpriced but when a team has a need to fill they don't have as much leverage. I persoanlly do not see why the Mets haven't talked to Perez about coming back. And Niese I think will be good but he will have his innings limited so you need someone in the rotation who can eat some innings so that the pen isn't overused early in the year.

You can call Pelfrey's first 2 seasons lackluster, or you could call them growing pains. I go with the latter. Sure, he could drop off slightly. But a AAA starter? That's not plausible.
They lost Pedro, but is that a loss? He could barely pitch when healthy, and barely played at all. If anything, they did drop payroll.
Thet have talked to Perez, but I think they are going to wait him out.
You have 2 players (Lowe, Perez) represented by Scott Boras - whose goal is to get them the maximum money possible. He's looking at $15m per for Perez, and $16m per for Lowe. Now, will somebody pay those prices? Yes. I can guarantee some team that is desperate and a perennial loser will look into signing them, and maybe they will.
But that does not mean the Mets HAVE to sign them at those prices, simply because they have the money, and simply because Lowe is an innings eater. He's a 36 year old innings eater. And he's not worth that money. Handicapping themselves for 2 future seasons with an albatross of a contract is simply bad spending.
Look at the Red Sox. They put a price on a guy, and they don't budge. They've done it with several free agents. They have won titles. I'm not comparing the 2 teams, but throwing around money simply because you have it does NOT win you titles, and the Yankees are the poster-children for such an example.
They need a pitcher. They will get 1 or 2. If Lowe's price doesn't come down from astronomical absurdity, then he can go pitch for the Nats.

I have to disagree with you-
they are cheap- they have gone for lesser players because
they are cheaper rather than just spending full $$ and getting
the BEST players....
of course they have made some high priced deals-
but getting say Alou? an over the hill OF on the relative cheap?
castillo? a 500 year old el Duque?
They could've been in the mix for a LOT of FA's over the last
few years- they have the $$- they just don't
That's why they haven't won a WS in 20 years
