The Rockies and Cubs have agreed in principle on a trade that would send Luis Vizcaino to Chicago for starter Jason Marquis, according to multiple baseball sources. The deal, first reported by ESPN, likely won't become official until next week when the players involved can take physicals. The Rockies made the math work to get a starter they have coveted for a month, while removing a setup reliever who asked to be dealt at season's end after expressing unhappiness with his role. The Rockies will trade the $4 million remaining on Vizcaino's contract for the $9.875 million left on Marquis' pact. The Cubs are expected to eat around $1 million on Marquis' contract, leaving the Rockies to pay approximately $5 million for one season with the 30-year-old right-hander. Chicago, meanwhile, still nets a $5 million savings.

Good luck with Vizcaino... looks like the Rockies got the better of the deal!!!

December 31, 2008  08:46 AM ET

Good riddens, Rockies will find out that Marquis thinks the baseball world revolves around him

The Cubs getting rid of Marquis? Eating only 1 mil of his $10 million dollar contract? Sounds too good to be true. Don't know who Vizcaino is, and I'm sure the Cubs don't really care. Slide Marshall in the fifth spot.

Going to be funny to see last years 4.53 era balloon in the Colorado air, has been going up every year and will sky rocket there

December 31, 2008  09:12 AM ET

I agree with Chitownblues - Vizcaino means nothing. The goal was to get rid of Marquis and salary and they accomplished both. Good thing Harry isn't still with us - he never could pronounce Vizcaino (I think that's why they traded Jose back in the early or mid 90's).

December 31, 2008  10:38 AM ET

i think the cubs didnt care what they got in return really because if you got anything quality it wouldnt have been the purpose they did it for SALARY DUMPING! you cant do it if ur going out there sayin gil trade you this this and this for this this and this....ok now its an even trade and still expect to be a better team..get rid of marquis the choker, and get vizcaino...then you got the room for bradley..(awesome..two people that arent afraid to show verbal displeasure against their teams..awesome...)

You're dead on, Cubsfan. I can almost hear the excuses he'll come up with from pitching in Denver.

What a break for the Cubs that someone is dumb enough to take him off their hands, and they only eat $1 million of his last year.

December 31, 2008  11:36 AM ET

aaawwwwhhhhh the Cubs, and idiot cub fans. They just put a smile on my face. This is the move that will get them the ws. Vizciano however does own a ws ring...with the SOX! Between Idiot cub fans and idiot Red Sox fans I dunno whose worse! Is it March yet?

December 31, 2008  11:39 AM ET

Marquis had an ERA over 4 and was only 11-9 because he was on the Cubbies. In Denver... dude is going to have an ERA just shy of 6 and will finish 5-16.

December 31, 2008  11:41 AM ET

Wow... no Cubs fans yet saying that this move was to free up $$$ to go and get Peavy. Thought Peavy would be the focus of this discussion.

Hey Jake... you, CC, AJ, Wang, and Joba could rule baseball for the next 5 years. How about becoming a MAN, play for a REAL organization, and get yourself some RINGS!

The Peavy deal had nothing to do with money, smart guy. He's signed and the Cubs have plenty of money to pay his salary. The problem is that the Padres wanted 6 players in return, including several of the Cubs top-level prospects. Kevin Towers overplayed his hand, which is why he couldn't make a deal with anyone.

As many others have said, getting rid of Marquis for only $1 million is a brilliant move regardless of who Vizcaino is or what he does. And the $4-5 million in savings will help pay for something somewhere, hopefully the lefty bat Lou's been asking for all offseason.

u can't argue with cubs fans, they see things from only their perspective. But I can???t blame them, u need a special kinda mindset to support that franchise.

Yeah F you too pale hose. Don't forget you south side terds are nothing more than a twin sister of the Cubs themselves. You take away 2005 and you share the same losing tradition as well. It's not as if the Sux have ever been making a big splash in the playoffs on a yearly basis either. At least the Cubs have the resources and payroll to remain competitive and No. 1 in Chicago while the Terd Sox' future remains bleak and bitter, along with their fans. Deep down the Sux have always been the South Side Ghetto Cubs, the Comiskey Cubs, the Dan Ryan Cubs, the Reinsdorf Cubs. Underneath those black uniforms, they've always been wearing Cubbie Blue!!! Is it March yet?

But none of it will be his fault......at least according to Jason.

December 31, 2008  12:39 PM ET

Vizcaino for Marquis! Hold the phone! No wait, don't...no one cares.

December 31, 2008  12:46 PM ET

When will the next Peavy to Chicago T&R start?

December 31, 2008  12:52 PM ET

Oh, right now the Yankees fans are like kittens in heat. "We got C.C.!, we got A.J.! We landed Teixeira (who will probably be called M.T. before opening day). Let's see them in this posts IF they don't make the playoffs (your really got to suck to not make the playoffs with THAT team...go ask the Mets)

Now, commenting on the post (what we should be doing here), I do agree that, if this is really a done deal, the Cubs do somewhat recover from the mistake of signing Marquis in the first place. It's a pity this was our consolation prize when we thought that we had Gil Meche on board and then, he went to the Royals.

Marquis can be a good pitcher for the first 3 or 4 innings...then he gets absolutely pounded. He is not destined to have a good season with the Rockies.

Vizcaino looks like an average middle relief guy. Guess that was no the target of the trade, but to save $5 million bucks and get rid of a guy that has never been able to perform. The Cardinals knew that all too well. Good luck to him.

Hope this revives the Peavy talks (within reasonable terms) and we land that left handed batter we need urgently. Milton Bradley? I would go with Abreu (older, but still, reliable)

Hey, I guess I just started the Peavy T&R. Actually, only wishful thinking. LOL.

by that logic u take out 85 and bears were not special either. It's about results my friend and the sox have what the cubs haven't gotten in a long time. U r just bitter they were one and done in the playoffs last year. The only reason the cubs have the resources is because of the trib co. But the resources don't guarentee anything. As far as your ghetto cubs comment, that just doesn't make any sense. Don't u have to go honor ron santo again u follower!
