Cubs making room for Bradley

07:49 AM ET 12.31 | The Cubs appear close to clearing a major hurdle in their efforts to sign switch-hitting outfielder Milton Bradley. Sources confirmed Tuesday night that the Cubs and Rockies are close to a trade that will send pitcher Jason Marquis and most of his $9.875 million contract to Colorado for embattled reliever Luis Vizcaino. The Marquis-for-Vizcaino deal, first reported by ESPN, would help the Cubs achieve two offseason goals: acquiring a veteran reliever for a mostly young bullpen and moving enough salary off the books to land a productive left-handed bat, namely Bradley. It has been considered a foregone conclusion throughout most of baseball the last two weeks that Bradley is headed to the Cubs, with mainly the payroll issue delaying the inevitable.
