Miami's transfer stipulations upset Marves

The Robert Marve saga just got more complicated. The Hurricanes quarterback was granted a release to transfer on Tuesday, University of Miami sports information spokesman Kerwin Lonzo said. But the release stipulations have infuriated the Marve family, and they intend to fight them. Eugene Marve told The Miami Herald that ``Shannon is trying to bar Robert from playing for any ACC school or any SEC school or any school in Florida. This goes in relationship with his contempt for and arrogance toward my son, Robert. ``Shannon gave him the release with that stipulation. I've never heard of that before. The ACC [ban] is reasonable. The SEC is ridiculous. There are a lot of schools in the SEC that never see Miami. This has gone to a personal attack against my son, and it will not go without challenge. This is a shameful day that Shannon has brought to the University of Miami. This is a shameful day for Randy Shannon and what he represents, and every recruit should watch out for what you're seeing happening to Robert Marve." Marve, who will have to sit out one season per NCAA rules, has interest in playing at Florida, Tennessee and LSU.

Why would Miami not alllow him to transfer within the state of Florida????

Didn't Brock Berlin transfer from FL to Miami?????

Its hard to say at this time what is going on in South Florida. I do believe its more on a personal level with Shannon and Robert. Personally, being a Hurricanes fan, I wouldnt care where he went to. Robert Marve is a talented young QB, but he does need to get his head outta his **** and grow up. The stupid immature stuff he pulled off at Miami did nothing but irk Shannon (4 tardys in a semester and his run in with a side mirror of a car). Shannon is showing these players they need to grow up and not be stupid, which I like. What I dont like right now is Shannon thinking he is God and able to do what he wants. There is a difference between a Coach and a Dictator.

Same old Thug U!

Who does this kid think he is to be so demanding?

December 31, 2008  09:26 AM ET

He wasn't even good enough to be the official guy with a mediocre Miami team.

December 31, 2008  09:40 AM ET

Gotta side with the Marves' on this one. That strict type of stipulation is ridiculous and unheard of.

This is not a good look for Shannon.

Well I think that Shannon means well, like he's trying to send a message to Marve of quit the stupid stuff and get serious. However it is ridiculous to say that he can't transfer to another ACC school and/or SEC schools, if that's really what he said.

Yeah... the article lays it our correctly. He cant play for OBC. That does indeed seem silly.. or petty as the case may be.

i am riding with shannon....robert showed total lack of disrespect for authority and rules with his actions...he started slinging the mud so now shannon is fighting back...stop being a crybaby and take up shop in the big east or conference usa

Eugene Marve is the biggest Richard Cranium in the world. He should be more worried about his kid attending class and having class then the football situation. The kid is one step away from being out of college all together with all of his suspensions but have you heard his father say anything about that? NO Remember folks we have only heard one side of the story since Randy has chosen not to go public with his side of the story. So the question is who has class and who doesn't? I know my answer.

December 31, 2008  10:06 AM ET

Sexton... Lay off the thug stuff.

Randy is without question, trying to teach his kids accountability and although I don't agree to everything he has done this year, but who are we to say he's wrong when we don't know the whole story. Randy style is in running a tight ship and the rules have been posted and agreed to by the players... If ya can't do the time, don't do the crime... sorta thing and if ya don't like the rules, then change them before you break them.

I think the real bottom line to Marve's leaving the program is his wanting to be the only QB, and Harris has shown he can be a true competitor.

The writing was on the wall and Marve wanted his own time and glory in the spot lights.

His leaving shows lack of maturity and a his ego is getting in the way.

I wished it were different and I wish him well... But See Ya, It's all about the U.

You can play anywhere you want to Robert, you just have to sit out a year. And it sounds like you could use some time to learn the new system and get your academics in order. Seeing as how your chances of being in the NFL are slim and none, you may want to start focusing on getting a degree anyway.

December 31, 2008  10:39 AM ET

I like Shannon, but I think the stipulations are insane. Shannon is worried about Marve going to UF or FSU, but you don't restict a kid to this degree (ACC - understood, SEC, - ridiculous, State of FL - insane).

UCLA needs a qb

December 31, 2008  10:55 AM ET

if you all had any clue, you would know the reason for the stipulations..

its called TAMPERING

they've (marves dad/hs coach) been trying to shop marve around to SEC schools since his first suspension, and you cannot do that.

they dug their own grave on this one, havent you noticed the 2 others that transfered could go where they please?

December 31, 2008  10:57 AM ET

by the way, robert marves father is quite possibly the biggest idiot on planet earth..

hes a coward, straight up.

Sorry, I meant to post this here, but I accidentally posted it on the thread regarding Marve's HS coach. Oops.

It is fairly routine for a school to restrict an athlete's transfer to a school outside of that current school's conference. Happens all the time. Restricting an athlete's choices to include another, wholly separate conference, as well as the recruit's entire home state, is without precedent. Regardless of your opinion of Marve, this is grossly unfair, not to mention EXTREMELY petty. I'm not even sure it's legal.

That being said, I don't understand why a school would restrict a kid's transfer ANYWHERE. If they're not good enough to play/start on your team, why should you care if he transfers in-conference?

December 31, 2008  11:04 AM ET

its not petty, hes getting what he deserves for

December 31, 2008  11:06 AM ET

damn i hit the submit button on accident,

hes getting what he deserves.

notice the other 2 who transfered from The U could go where they wanted.. thats because they werent trying to shop their services to other schools during the season..
