Has Bears GM opened door for McNabb, Cassel?

All over Chicago, the Bring Donovan McNabb Home project resumed Tuesday after Jerry Angelo made it clear he hopes to upgrade the Bears at quarterback. Angelo went to great lengths to express confidence in Kyle Orton but, more than anything in a 30-minute news conference at Halas Hall, the Bears general manager established quarterback as the team's top off-season priority. It was a stunning departure for a GM who has made a career out of prioritizing defense and a strong running game. "I know that there's going to be a lot of talk about our No. 1 receiver [but] guys, it starts with the quarterback," Angelo said. "We have to get the quarterback position stabilized. And we're fixated on that." Hello, Matt Cassel? Anybody for Jeff Garcia at 39? Would the Bengals trade Carson Palmer? To many in town the development conjures up images of McNabb, who has a year left on his contract but constantly is rumored to be leaving Philadelphia. The idea is irresistible to anyone who has seen McNabb's resurgence in the second half of the season. But understand how difficult it would be to pry McNabb out of Philadelphia. As for Cassel, a bidding war will commence and his representatives likely will demand he be handed the No. 1 job.

I hope so.

I'm not a bears fan but they could really use a good QB!

"Would the Bengals trade Carson Palmer?" - Are you joking?

Matt Cassel won't be the same outside of New England. The next city he ends up in won't have Randy Moss, won't have Wes Welker... oh and they won't be coming off an 18-1 near perfect season either. Don't waste your money on him.

The Eagles don't trade easily. Don't be surprised when we accept no less than two first round picks for the 32 year old.

I'm a huge Bears fan living in Philly....I don't want McNabb on this team. No heart, folds when it counts. They should do everything they can to get someone who doesn't choke in big spots and can handle a little media scrutiny. I'd take Cassel, but I worry that he is a one hit wonder. It's obvious the Bears can't develop a QB, so they need to find someone established already...I just don't know who that is.

December 31, 2008  08:15 AM ET

Cassel isn't going to get out of NEW ENGLAND since they don't know the "real" status of Brady's knee and everything else there.. I believe McNabb will be checking out some places in Minnesota this weekend...

Loonie smith has already said that Orton is his QB coming into next season. besides the bear need more then just a QB

December 31, 2008  08:18 AM ET

i dont see alot of quality QB's being available this year. philly and the eagles will stay together and cassel isnt going anywhere either

McNabb is at end of career status. Big mistake for the Bears to waste their resources on him.

December 31, 2008  08:34 AM ET

How about Matt Leinart?.... I'd spend a 1st rounder on him over anyone available in the draft

December 31, 2008  08:43 AM ET

Neither will be with the Bears......period...

December 31, 2008  08:45 AM ET

Orton first year got Bears to playoffs but Grossman got heathy for playoffs and they took Orton out.
This year in my eyes he didnt do to bad with some sub par WR's. Their main WR is a 5, 11 kick returner in Deven Hester. I am not saying he is not good but th Bears could use a few more options to help take the pressure off of the good players they do have.
Bring in a Offenecive line and a few WR's rather than going and spending the farm on old QB's.
We all saw how retread Brett Farve did which was about how good Orton did. Got close to the playoffs but not close enough.
Give Orton the tools rather than try and bring in a person who will bring in people to watch the games with no real hope of actually winnning.

If your going to bring in McNabb you may as well bring back Kordell Stewart as well.

December 31, 2008  08:47 AM ET

I dont want Mcnabb out of philly. Eagles will do sumin to keep him and Dawkins. Go grab Cassell CHI if yall want.

McNabb would be a good fit... they are a run first offense and he wouldn't be asked to do much except throw downfield which he is still good at..

December 31, 2008  08:53 AM ET

McNabb is the face of the Iggles.... This would be a HUGE mistake in letting him go.

December 31, 2008  08:54 AM ET

McNabb will stay in philly but Cassell would work for the Bears im sure!

December 31, 2008  08:57 AM ET

i think what some have said is right. Pats keep Cassell because no one really knows at what point Brady is at in terms of rehabbin his knee and how it will react to a game situation. After the successful Flacco Matt ryan experiments I wouldn't be surprised to see a lot of teams try to go for the rookie QB ala draft experiment.
