Cowboys owner, coach back Romo

The support for quarterback Tony Romo is everywhere, but is it justified for a quarterback who enters the off-season with a 27-12 mark as a full-time starter with no playoff wins? Jerry Jones and Wade Phillips think so. During the last four weeks of the season, Romo had more turnovers -- nine -- than touchdown passes -- five. Even so, Phillips said he believes Romo is an elite quarterback despite his 5-8 record in December. "Certainly some things happen with him that don't happen with other quarterbacks," Phillips said. "But we've got to rein it in in some areas. I see too many good things, too many great things that he does that other people can't do. "I think he can be an elite quarterback and a Pro Bowl quarterback and a top player." Jones said he can't finger why the team, especially Romo, struggles down the stretch. But other top quarterbacks have endured similar problems. New Orleans' Drew Brees didn't have a winning record in the last month of the season until 2004 -- his fourth year in the league, when he was still with San Diego. Eli Manning of the New York Giants went 1-4 in his rookie year of 2004.

Love you Tony....Hang in there! They'll get you a better QB coach and you'll right the ship!

I thknk they should just throw all passes to TO and also make the running game all end-arounds with TO getting the ball. This would take the heat off of Romo and TO would be happy.

December 31, 2008  08:43 AM ET

Why???... Romo will never lead this team to superbowl.... His goofy smile is not what a leader needs to display... that persona is great for a pick-up game, or even the pro-bowl game, but not the type of person who can lead his team when adversity hits...

The announcers of the Philly game said that when they met with Romo, he said that he planned on playing with a smile on his face... give me a break!!!.... smile when you are up by 21 with 2:00 minutes left Tony...

Aikman had the exact type of leadership skills that a QB needs... especially when trying to lead a team like the Cowboys and the characters that they always seem to have on the team... how can Romo be taken seriously with a goofy smile and a sub-par resume???

I say trade Romo for Matt Leinart.... both under-achievers but Leinart will be the better leader..

December 31, 2008  08:45 AM ET

Romo sucks... trade him... or cut him... spend the money and get Cassel... he has displayed better leadership skills..

December 31, 2008  08:52 AM ET

What I got from reading ALL of it was this. Romo said they got out coached.....Their offense was exposed by the Eagles ..I think he is right...

Oh I can't argue anything about the Great Troy Aikman. Oh, greatness greatness greatness....

Anyway, look, Tony's got a lot to learn, o.k. no problem. He showed signs last season of what he is capable of. He just needs some polishing. Serious polishing and lessons on ball control.

Don't say he will "never lead this team". You don't know that unless you have a crystal ball lying around somewhere. They need to get TO out of his damn ear and out of that locker room. I'm not saying that's Romo's only problem, but it has affected his play...Too much unnecessary pressure.

And by the way, I like my QB to be out there having fun, with a smile on his face. McNabb smiles constantly and it worked for him.

Did it work for McNabb???... all I ever hear is how Philly fans want to get rid of him.... I agree with you that #1 thing is to get rid of T.O.... I'm not to sure that Jones gets it though... T.O. gives him the Cowboys headlines and Jones likes those as much as he likes wins...

They also need to enter next season with Felix as their feature back.... Barber is much more effective as a change of pace back...

I agree he will be fine and NEXT YEAR LOOK OUT!

If I were Jones, seriously, I would fire Wade and Garrett and go get Shanahan.... he wouldbe perfect as a long term coach.... perfect fit for the Cowboys....

Can you imagine how Aikman would re-act to a guy like T.O.?.... Aikman would have no part of his antics... which again, is my point about leadership... there should be absolutely no doubt who the leader of your team is.... and right now the Cowboys have too many that are trying to be.... it doesn't have to be the QB, but we sure know that Romo cannot be the 'Guy'.... he's way too goofy... and can't be taken seriously.... his past failures are too much to get past now and he won't be respected by the rest of the team...

Aikman would have inisited on the release of T.O..... are at the very least, an owner issued muzzle on Owens...

December 31, 2008  09:41 AM ET

Considering that Romo was an undrafted rookie free agent, the 'Boys got a good deal with him. That being said, when it comes to the big game, his head hs not there and I don't think he prepares enough. The comments he made after the PHI loss....

"We're going to try and get back in the playoffs and try to win the Super Bowl. That's all you can do. If we don't, OK. If we do, OK. I've had a lot worse happen to me than a loss in a sporting event, that's for sure."

While for most normal people that is the right frame of mind, he is an NFL QB and I find it highly unusual that a 2 time pro bowler and leader of "the most talented team in the NFL" is talking like that. He should be saying things like "It's my mission to get to the Superbowl" or "I am dedicated to getting to the Superbowl". This is what we expect from our superstars. I still think he has the tools to get them there, but he has to change his mental attitude. This might be why he went undrafted.

I agree. Aikman wouldn't take his chit for a freaking second. No doubt.

But let me ask you this, why is it that the QB has to be the leader of the team? Flacco isn't, Ray Lewis is. E Manning isn't a leader on the Giants, Coughlin is....And on and on...

I believe that since Jerry signed this group of ego maniacs, he should have signed a stronger personality of a coach. I feel bad for Romo. He is in a no win situation

Flacco is a rookie and Manning is the leader in the locker room (with Pierce) and in the huddle. I can't argue with the stuff being written about TO, because once Tiki retired, and the Giants got rid of Shockey, their offense became a more coherent unit and once he (TO) is gone I think Romo might be able to get his head together. But I still beleive the problem isn't his talent....it's in his head and until he starts getting his head into the game, you'll continue to see lack luster results down the stretch.

Great point and I couldn't agree more...except the Manning part...No way do I think he is a leader whatsoever.

I knew you'd make your way over here...

I know the concept of sticking with a team must be hard for you to grasp, but it's true...If you read comments by readers in our Dallas papers and on radio, you'll hear that the majority of the fan base is not bailing on Romo yet.

I swear, if I was on hear bashing Romo, you'd call me a bandwagoner and not a true fan. I'll say it until the day he's gone, I'm sticking with Romo. That's what a true fan does.

I guess you can't call us all bandwagoners anymore, huh.

I'll defer the Manning argument until after the playoffs. But I stuck with Manning (before the SB win) like you guys are sticking with Romo. Although I will say I had a week of doubt after the Vikings crushed us last year 44-17 in week 12.

You equate leadership with " noise makers ", guys who say a lot.
Players choose their leader by whom they believe in when a game is on the line and/or when things are going bad. It is the old concept of " Who do you want to be in that fox hole with when it all hits the fan"........That is why Eli Manning is considered a leader to his team mates.
The Cowboys have NO leader. That is their problem. Certainly not Romo or TO or any of their stars. Ware could be someday, James perhaps, Whitten has the respect, but it is not his style. Phillips has to assume that role knowing it does not come from the locker room, but it is way beyond his ability to deliver. He is a coordinator with the title of HC, and the players know it..
