Jet: Favre was aloof teammate

If Brett Favre wants to play another year with the Jets, he'll have to work a lot harder to win over his teammates than he did this season. "There was a lot of resentment in the room about him," a Jets player told Newsday yesterday. He requested anonymity because team owner Woody Johnson has stated publicly that Favre is welcome to return next season if he wants to. (Favre reportedly will take until the end of February to decide about returning.) The 39-year-old quarterback is not as welcome with his teammates, according to this veteran. After the Jets traded for Favre Aug. 6, the sure Hall of Famer made no effort to ingratiate himself with the already assembled team, the veteran said. He said Favre spent most of his down time at the practice facility in an office specially designated for him near the equipment room, not with teammates in the locker room, even after the media departed. "He never socialized with us, never went to dinner with anyone," the player said. Asked to describe Favre in a word, he said: "Distant."

thomas jones supposedly bagged on favre in an interview. haven't listened to the interview yet to know if jones really slammed favre or was taken out of context.

January 2, 2009  07:23 AM ET

thomas jones was straight doo doo last yr, favre gets to town and opens those running lanes up for him and now he feels the need to bash him? whatever!

how many 40 year olds do you see hanging out w/ 20-25 year olds? not many

It all depends on whether the 40 year old is male and the 20-25 year olds are female. =-]

Still Brett COULD have gone to/hosted a cook-out or something.

Thomas Jones comments were:

"We're a team and we win together ... but at the same time, you can't turn the ball over and expect to win," Jones said in an interview Tuesday with New York Hot 97 FM. Favre threw three interceptions in the Jets' season-ending 24-17 loss to Miami that clinched the AFC East for the Dolphins.

"The other day, the three interceptions really hurt us. I mean, that's just reality," Jones told the radio station. "If I were to sit here and say, 'Oh, man, it's OK,' that's not reality. ... I don't like it, I know everybody else on the team doesn't like it.

"If somebody is not playing well, they need to come out of the game," Jones told Hot 97 FM. "You're jeopardizing the whole team because you're having a bad day. To me, that's not fair to everybody else. You're not the only one on the team. So when you get to the wire and somebody is just giving the game up, I mean, it's just not [fair]."

---

Not exactly damning, more like if a player has a bad game, bench him. In some ways you could read Jones comments as more a dislike of a former coach decisions than about placing blame on a player's performance.

I was reading it that way too.Either way i feel Thomas Jones basically said what the majority of us Jets fans were thinking.Throws 3 picks and oh its ok have at it.Between that and the opening drive at Seattle,I'm happy they canned Mangidiot's a ss.

The Jets are a bunch of front-runners. They lived in mediocrity for FOREVER until Favre came to town and gave them life for 3/4 of a season. Then, with a torn bicep, he tried to gut it out but couldn't get the job done. It isn't his fault Kellen Clemens is a joke and they have noone to turn to in times of need. When the Jets had Pennington, he wasn't good enough. In fact, you have to go back to Namath to find a QB who satisfied fans and players. Champions take defeat in stride and blame nobody else. These Jets (and their fans) sound like 10 year-olds crying because they lost their Pop Warner game. Grow up and act like pros. Favre already has won a Bowl and a fistful of MVPs. He is bound for Canton. How many of these Jets (wannabes) can say the same? The Jets and their desperate fans welcomed Favre as their saviour, even at 39, he gave them some thrills that haven't been seen at the Meadowlands (in Jets green) in forever. Be grateful you guys had a shot this year and build toward next season. Stop this pathetic whining, it's very annoying to the rest of the mature NFL fans out here.

Frontrunners? Is that why the meadowlands sell out every year?
You have no clue what you are talking about. Jets fans wanted to keep Chad. Not all jets fans welcomed Brett. Infact, as a Jets fan, I am still a chad fan. And I want him back. I never like Brett and was never on board with him.

How many Jets fans do you talk to daily?
No Jets fans are whining. More like "We told you so, NY".

You sell seats because the team is in new york, pls dont forget that. the jets have been mediorce for a very long time and jets fans all were calling for chad to be becnhed last year when the team started struggling, which he was. I am a steelers fan but also a brett favre fan. Does brett throws lots of interceptions, the asnwer to that is yes. it just like steeler fans. we complain because Ben holds on to the ball, well sometimes they are sacks and sometimes they are the last sec play against baltimore. Thats what you get with Brett, but apart from that, he also makes his teammates better. he made ryan grant better last year and so did he make thomas jone better who was horrible last year and jet fans wanted to kick out of town. Jones is a coward for not going to Brett to talk to him face to face and the annoymous person who said brett doesnt hang with them is coward and doesnt deserve to call himself a man. thats what bit@ches do.

January 2, 2009  09:15 AM ET

Thomas Jones gave us his opinion on Favre, maybe he was the anonymous source who just became known?

January 2, 2009  09:17 AM ET

The anonymous player wanted to go out with Brett for a steak dinner after Brett slapped his heiny. Brett was watching all-male review in his "private" office.

January 2, 2009  09:18 AM ET

Brett Favre is 38/39, some of these other guys are in their earlt to mid 20s. I can understand why there's a disconnect socially.

That being said -- wow -- how great did THAT experiment turn out for the Jets?

January 2, 2009  09:30 AM ET

The story indicates that Favre has already poisened the water. If he decides to play next year, he'll need to spend a lot of time trying to repair relationships rather than learning a new playbook.

January 2, 2009  09:44 AM ET

guess maybe ted thompson had reasons for jettisoning favre and going with rodgers...one less headache to deal with every year.

don't get me wrong, we all loved favre and what he has done for the packers organization. if he had stayed retired, he would still be loved by everyone. but the last 6-7 months or so have shown that favre needs a lot of attention and ego stroking to keep going. unreal how a 39 yr old veteran needs so much attention and having to be constantly told he's needed and this and that...

have fun new york...the favre offseason is just beginning...
