Jets execs hoping for Favre retirement?

As the Jets continue to compile a list and schedule interviews for their vacant head-coaching job, there are some in the organization who might not mind having to find a new quarterback as well. Nobody associated with the Jets is pressing Brett Favre to make a decision on his future, in part because they don't want to be seen as the team that ran a future Hall of Fame quarterback out of town. But there are those, including owner Woody Johnson and general manager Mike Tannenbaum, who privately indicated they might be okay with any decision Favre makes -- despite Johnson's and Tannenbaum's public pleas for Favre to return next season.

this all feels deja vu.

Publicly say Brett is welcome to come back but privately say Brett we need you to decide to retire. I think it's time for Brett to take a page from General MacArthur and just fade away.

I don't understand the problem here? Why not just say "Thanks for the craptastic year, but this train has left the station too?"

In other news Jet fans are wondering what Jets execs plan on doing about the QB situation if in fact Favre does retire as they are hoping he does.

Agreed...they hardly run the risk of being the team that drove him out of the game. He was at the wheel of THAT bus all by himself.

But it's funny...the Jets signed him for his arm, but forgot that they have to take his head, too. Now they wish it would all just go away. Gonna be a long off-season waiting on THAT decision. Again.

Farve should go to Dallas next. He can help Romo perfect his interception and fumbling skills.

January 2, 2009  08:36 AM ET

It's time for the Farve gunslinger to ride off into the sunset and go fishing.

January 2, 2009  08:36 AM ET

I agree with what Jones said but I would like to keep Brett on for one more year because after we get T.O in the off season that will give brett the wr he always wanted and no more excuses.

This generally makes little sense and the press will spin this 180 degrees the other direction tomorrow. When is our "man bites dog" headline?

I think the qb situation will get pretty interesting in Ny I forsee another guy looking to finish his career either Mcnabb or I really think Jeff Garcia will be here by next year.

He needs to leave the game before his hostage taking tactics ruin his legacy even further.
