DeRosa trade may jump-start Peavy talks

After trading Mark DeRosa to the Cleveland Indians and signing free-agent infielder Aaron Miles in correlated moves Wednesday, the Cubs are poised to complete their priority offseason activity as early as next week. That's when the trade of right-hander Jason Marquis to the Colorado Rockies for reliever Luis Vizcaino and the subsequent signing of free-agent outfielder Milton Bradley are expected to become official. And when the dust settles on those moves, the Cubs will be in position to revisit the Jake Peavy trade talks with the San Diego Padres or even -- as the Baltimore Sun speculated -- the Brian Roberts talks with the Orioles that went nowhere a year ago. The Cubs would operate from a position of strength in either potential negotiation, and the acquisition of three touted pitching prospects for DeRosa deepens the well of possible trading pieces. Based on conversations with several sources, the flexibility to pursue another starting pitcher -- especially if it's Peavy -- likely hinges on the Cubs' ownership transition taking clearer shape in the coming weeks. A key timeframe might be the quarterly owners meetings Jan. 13-15 in Phoenix. The Cubs and Padres haven't discussed a Peavy trade since the Cubs pulled out of negotiations more than two weeks ago at the winter meetings.

The Cubs may not have gone anywhere recently, they did make the playoffs and they are tooled up for a run.

Just heard that this is a done deal. The Cubs have acquired Peavy for Carlos Zambrano, Ted Lilly and Aramis Ramirez.

It's a good trade for both the teams...

All the Cubs haters really find a way to show their true colors.

I am not a Cub hater. How can you hate loveable losers?

I just like to make fun of Cubs and it's fans!

we should focus on a lefty bat..... not named milton bradley ...... and a leadoff hitter .... not named aaron miles .... brian roberts would be a great fit if those subborn orioles would accept a deal built around felix pie.

The Cubs could use a leadoff hitter more than a starting pitcher, even if it is Peavy. Their rotation is plenty good enough to win, but a leadoff hitter like Roberts could be a great catalyst for that offense that sputters in October.

Again, we have wait for others to agree to those trades. It's the Cubs, they made enough money off that hockey game to pay for Bradley's contract. Padres were wanting pitchers, but not relief pitchers which they got in the DeRosa deal. The Cubs want Garrett Olson and Brian Roberts from the Orioles, that could happen. If they were going to get rid of DeRosa, they should have traded him to the Philles where they could have gotten either JA Happ or Kyle Kendrick back in return and then they could have presented the Padres with take it or leave it deal. The deal should have been like this.

Garrett Olson
JA Happ/Kyle Kendrick
Sean Marshall
Josh Vitters
Ronny Cendano

I do hate the Cubs and they aren't tooled up but they are certainly Tools.

The Cubs? The friggin Cubs? Lets let this franchise die and be sold and retooled and THEN talk about them like this. Not as a wild card hopeful/first round flop. Hell lets talk about the Marlins or Rangers, they have way more upside.

Awww, did someone not get the Suzy Homeaker Oven for Christmas?

Please, I've probably spilled better stuff from my rolling tray than that lint infested hairball you've become accustomed to.

Finally, words of wisdom. The rotation will be better than most, a good october bat is what's needed.

Sounds like the Cubs are coming around, I like what I'm reading. As a Yankees fan, it's nice to see small market teams wheeling and dealing like this to actually improve. Wait, Chicago...that's like the 3rd largest city in the country! It's about time they spend to win. Yes, I know they've spent before, but this time it seems different....like they know what they're doing.

No. That urine comes from the Black Ghetto that surrounds Comiskey. Don't slip in the parking lot.
