Source: Red Sox out of Lowe chase
According to a source familiar with the negotiations, Derek Lowe is likely to continue shopping for a more desirable offer after the New York Mets presented him with a three-year, $36 million offer on Tuesday. While some reports have placed Lowe's target in the range of five years and $90 million, a much more probable outcome is that Lowe ends up with a three- or four-year deal worth in the rage of $14-$15 million annually. It was unclear whether the Mets' proposal included any type of option, but the sides last week were dicsussing a pair of proposals, one being a four-year offer and the other being a three-year proposal with a vesting option. Part of the reason the Mets may have entered the bidding with a relatively conservative offer is because they believe Lowe has no other suitors in the Northeast, where the pitcher has expressed a desire to pitch. The Yankees, Red Sox and Phillies had only preliminary conversations with Lowe and none of those clubs is believed to be interested in the pitcher at this time.

How does a story that talks about an offer from the Mets, and only "preliminary conversations" with the THREE other Northeast teams get a tag line of "Red Sox Out of Lowe Chase"?
Don't you actually have to be chasing to be out of it???
And Tony, why don't you wait until we actually have to lace 'em up before you self-annoint the Yanks as WS Champs... You guys haven't been able to win a WS since your payroll went up over $100M - why would you think that $200M will do the trick?

The Yanks should sweep in and steal Manny and Lowe just to add to Boston's horrific offseason. Lowe is an inning-eater and very good post season performer and Manny would love to stare at one or a few of those bombs sailing over the Monster while Dice-Clay or Mo-Lester watches on helplessly.

Is fake Tony a Yankees fan? I thought he was a Tigers fan...
And I agree that there has to be a chase in order for someone to be out of a chase. I don't see Lowe in the AL East next year.
It's not about the payroll, it it were the Red Sox would not have won a WS with their over 100 mil payroll...

Too bad. Lowe used to get roughed up in the AL East.

Lowe is not going to find any team willing to give him 5 years or $16M per season. In the end he probably gets a 3 year deal with an option for $14M a season. And most likely from the Mets as they have no competition to bid against them barring someone coming out of nowhere to grab Lowe in the 11th hour.

I really don't think they want Lowe. Last time he played for them they let him go willingly as a free agent because his era was close to 5 I think. Lowe looks good in the NL West but put him back in the AL and I don't think he will look as good as Boras is trying to make teams believe he is.

Hate much? Even a Yankee fan knows Papi is not done and that Pedroia is the real thing. The only thing you got right was that they have no catcher. And in the outfield they have Drew and Bay who put up some decent power numbers.

Typical dumb@%&& Yankee fan and their impeccable widsom. Every year we hear how they win in December, but the following season of a +$200 million payroll gets them NOTHING! This year is no different. The Yankees HAD to spend all this money on CC, Burnett, Teixiera just to get CLOSE to the Red Sox. IMO they're STILL going to finish behing the Red Sox b.c. the Sox have better pitching AND defense, of which the Yankees are horrible in the defense department. Pedroia's a flash in the pan? He's done it 2 years in a row. Big Papi fading? He still hit 23 HR's in 2/3 of a season, where he spent HALF of that still recovering. I can't wait to beat up on the Yankees this year. The anticipation level is almost matching the level before the 2004 season. It will be glorious.

I agree... and they'd better hurry up. Hey Mets: Your starting pitching has SU*KED the last few years - part of the reason (along with the bullpen) that you've been close enough in the last month to play your way out of the playoffs. They're going to dick around and lose out on him, too, trying to be cute.

Hey dumb@&& Yankee fan, it was obvious the Red Sox and Angels were USED by Cashman and Boras to negotiate a contract for the Yankees, so all they had to do was tell Boras and Teixiera that they will bid $10 million more than the highest offer on the table. Teixiera was going to the Yankees from the beginning. All this crap about swooping in a stealing Teixiera from under the Red Sox noses is hogwash. He was a Yankee since the late November meeting.
And I don't even care. It makes it real easy to root against Teixiera now since all he is is a hired gun for the New York Mercenaries. The Mercs have no chemistry. Give me Pedroia, Youkilis and Papi and day over any of the Mercs in New York (save Jeter, but he's too old and slow now to make an impact). I can't wait for the season to start so we can beat up on the Mercs.

Getting Lowe is the kind of move that could get the Yanks to the top of the AL East, but they won't do it ... Lowe for $36/3yr is a great sign, the only reason he hasn't sign yet is because he wanted to go back to the Sox badly, if the Sox did not want him he wants to be Yankee and make the Sox regret it ... Red Sox / Yankees, those are the only teams in Lowe's mind, any others are just backup plans, while he might sign with the Mets, I don't see him fitting in the Met clubhouse, he'll regret leaving LA

What's going to happen when the Yanks don't win after spending 420+M. Cashman goes out the door and uncle George gives his boys a spanking.
Spending that much money only places even more pressure on a team that has struggled since 2000 to get back to the promise land.
Just ask A-Rod what pressure is all about. Sabathia, Tex and "my arm hurts"--Burnett had better perform and the old folks had better perform (Damon, Possada, Matsui, Rivera) Wang and Joba better perform and stay healthy or there will be hell to pay in the Bronx.
Can't wait to watch the collapse of the Evil Empire. The Sox will prevail but I would not be surprised to see the young studs from Tampa win again. There is no pressure on the Rays and they are young and healthy. The Sox are getting younger with a good mix of veterans. The Yanks are wannabe's. Should be nothing but fun.

Theo is such a great GM, swooping in to steal Penny. Now that's genius. And the 2011 plan for Mauer. Things are really falling into place for the Beanies. Ortiz is done, and I'm sick of that guy. The media loves him almost as much as they love Favre, it's annoying...I can't stand the nick name "big papi." C'mon, he seems like a good guy, but Ortiz is done, regressing back to his pre-Manny, Minnesota days.

..and the Sux pen is no good. Papelbaum is a punk with a weak stomach and a big head, and that guy that doesn't look at the plate when he throws it can't have another good season, so he's shot. And the rest of those guys out there are nothing to brag about. They need help in so many areas. No power, no 'pen, a fragile starting rotation, no catcher, and the biggest power hitter is 4' 10".

Maybe because your teams blow? The Red Sox have no heart? Obviously you weren't watching the ALCS games, like game 6 for instance? Also why are Yankee fans posting on a story regarding the Red Sox? I am not referring to you as you stated you aren't a fan but looking at the other comments, its like every time a story that involves the Red Sox is involved the Yankme fans have to spew their garbage on the boards. I find it funny that on a consistent basis they take players from the Red Sox organization.
