Will Ferentz leave Iowa for NFL?
According to a source, Cleveland Browns owner Randy Lerner was not pleased when former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Bill Cowher spurned his advances and so he is prepared to make what was described as a "huge" financial offer to Scott Pioli that would include not only millions, but more importantly full control of the organization and the funds necessary to bring in Pioli's first choice as head coach, Iowa's Kirk Ferentz. Although it has been widely speculated that Pioli might try to create a package deal that would include young Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels as his head coach, that is not the case. Pioli favors Ferentz, with whom he first worked under Bill Belichick when both were with the Browns 15 years ago. Ferentz survived the move to Baltimore and was the Ravens assistant head coach/offensive line coach before leaving to take over the Iowa program in 1998.

Ferentz is in the "circle of trust". He is a decent coach who makes due with the players that fall to him in the over-recruited big 10.5.
His o-lineman usually perform well, and usually are busts in the NFL. If you could have the coach who builds dominant o-lines with mediocre players in the NFL, wouldn't that interest you?
O-line is where it is happening in the NFL. The playoff teams are the ones that have decent o-line play. It is consistent. That is the way it works now.
That is why Shanahan's days are in the past. His zone-blocking one-touch and move system is dying in the NFL. Like it the cover 2 is dying.
Ferentz is a nice choice and I would like to see him in Cleveland over Mangini. Josh Daniels proved to be the guy who moved the offense in NE. Mangenius fell on his **** away from the comfort of the Belichick system.

Ferentz is a good coach, but a great person. I know Iowa isn't a powerhouse, but it turns out great student athletes & that is why he is cherished in Iowa. He is very well respected & I think he could be a good NFL coach, they will never love him like they do in Iowa. He & his wife are very invested in the community & his son is a freshman at Iowa this year. Iowa does turn out players that succeed in the NFL, hello Bob Sanders, Nate Kaeding, and a slew of others. Iowa does not get the top athletes like Florida, Ohio State, etc and they never will, but Ferentz is loved there & yes, I agree he is overpaid, but he continually turns out decent teams & great players....Shonn Greene this year. I really don't think Iowa will lose him, he's got it too good here.

The Ferentz down side has been recruiting in college, forced to make do with athletes below the average for the majors.
The upside is that he has developed these athletes and gotten results beyond their recruiting class. Part of this is fitting his scheme to the best athletes hee can get, not recruiting for a particular scheme.
In the NFL, this is what the Browns need. He won't face his recruiting downside.

Why does Ferentz get "all that praise" ?? His first year at Iowa he was 1-10, and by the 4th year there he was 11-1, 8-0 in the Big 10 and playing in the Orange Bowl. He's only been at Iowa 10 years and is the 2nd winningest coach in the 120 years of Hawkeye Football, and in those 10 years, we've played in 4 New Year's Bowls. By the way, there are currently 24 former Hawkeyes on NFL rosters - and 14 of the 24 were on teams that made the playoffs this year
