Spagnuolo tops Jets list

One of the first calls that Jet management made, only hours after firing Eric Mangini on Monday, was to the crosstown rival Giants. It did not take long for the Jets to identify Steve Spagnuolo, the Giants' defensive coordinator, as a candidate for their head coaching job. And when Bill Cowher bowed out Tuesday, Spagnuolo shot to the top of the list. The 49-year-old is expected to interview with the Jets tomorrow - but Gang Green has plenty of competition for his services. He interviewed with the Lions and Browns yesterday, and is scheduled to meet with the Broncos tomorrow when he finishes with the Jets.

hope he goes to the broncos. staying in the apple will make the press blood thirsty on spags when the jets collapse.

If he's any good he certainly wont be in Detroit (we'll take an up and comer no name instead). If he's a flop, I'm sure we'll take him off your hands for many years to come. The only problem is his name doesnt start with an M...

Looks like a mug shot.

It looks like he just finished a food challenge and hes about ready to get the free shirt

He is an East Coast guy. From Mass. and wife from Philly. Makes sense to stay in NY.

So, no Detroit then, huh?

I don't see it. Cleveland, maybe, but it all depends on Shanahan, He chooses first and then Spagnuola takes the other one. Detroit will go another way, do not be surprised to see Fassel resurface, with the Rams or possibly Oakland if Gilbride does not get the Oakland job..

I guess then the Jets would ditch the 3-4. I've always been a 4-3 man myself.

Last year's Giants defense showed that the 4-3 and blitzing can get it done when it comes to generating a consistent rush.

I could def. see Spags in Denver

that doesnt make any sense for the Jets. They have gotten rid of too many good player that "don't fit" the 3-4, Vilma in particular, and signed FA's who "fit it", like Calvin Pace. Without Cowher, the chances of them switching is much much greater, and I agree that without the right LB's the 3-4 won't work, but to switch back is just awful. Sign Brian Billick and be done with it.

looks like he just got busted by Chris Hanson on "To Catch a Predator".

January 2, 2009  09:42 AM ET

Hey, if he goes to the Jets, at least he won't have to move and uproot his family.

Naw, dressed to well. Or has too much clothing on.

January 2, 2009  01:56 PM ET

Jets are better suited for 4-3 anyway. Move Ellis inside With Jenkins and put Gholston, Coleman and Thomas at ends on rotation. , Pace Barton and Harris @ LB. That would work.

there isn't enough evil you could commit in a lifetime to deserve a coaching job in detroit

A point that is being overlooked here is loyalty. Many posters made a point in asserting that Cowher would never go to Cleveland out of loyalty to the Rooney family. Point well taken.
IMHO, Spags doesn't go to the Jets for the same reason. Besides, if he's patient, he's the heir apparent with the Giants and inherits a much better situation than he would in New York and certainly better than Detroit.

On the other hand, Denver is beautiful this time of year....and BADLY needs a defensive guru. If I were a Giants fan, I'd be holding my breath until Bowlen's new GM hires a coach.

Sorry, 50year. Happy New Year!

Millen's first move will be to bring in Mike Williams to take some of the heat off Roy Williams and T.O. They've been complaining about being overworked and a quality receiver like Mike to share the load is the perfect solution.

Then he'll bring in Joey Harrington to back up Romo because you can never have too many promising young QB's.

The architect of the Cowboys next dynasty. Beware, NFC East, the Day of Reckoning is nigh!!
