Jets warming to Shanahan

The Jets' interest in Mike Shanahan is getting warmer, a person familiar with the team's thinking told the Daily News Thursday. With Bill Cowher out of the picture, and with no proven head coaches on their list of known candidates, the Jets are taking a hard look at the former Broncos coach, who was fired Tuesday in a move that sent shock waves throughout the NFL. As of late Thursday, it was unclear if the Jets had reached out to Shanahan, but they are expected to do so. They don't seem to be in any rush to find Eric Mangini's replacement, but at the same time, they realize a coach of Shanahan's stature doesn't become available that often.

How funny is it that the Daily News says that Shanahan is the Jets new coach, and the Post has Spagnolo as the coach!

I guess the answer is that the press doesn't know s*** from shineola...

Seriously, I'm still thinking that Jerry Jones is trying to think how he could ever pull this off - Fire Phillips & Garret and hire Shanahan....

you heard it here first.... Jones has always been a huge Shanahan fan...

Actually, it was the first thing I said when I heard he was fired and read that he still wants to coach again. Wade wants to retire in the Dallas area. I'm sure Jerry can talk him into it. Won't even have to fire him. Just make him want to retire. Sort of like what Darth Vadar does to people.

As a PATS fan, I wouldn't want to see Shanahan coaching the Jets. Belichick's record against Shanahan is 3-5, though this could be less Shanahan and more the metaphysics of the history between the Broncos and Pats, with the Pats historically having difficulty against the Broncos.
Still, if I were Jets ownership, Shanahan would be my top priority.

The Jets are SOOOO lucky to have Shanny fall into their lap!

January 2, 2009  11:19 AM ET

The Bills disappoint me. The rest of the division has so manned up. Belichick (PATS). Parcells (FINS). Shanahan??? (JETS???). But the Bills are always so second-rate.

Not soooo surpised at Shanahans release. after 14 yrs it may just have been time for a new set of eyes on the situation.....

January 2, 2009  11:35 AM ET

Shanahan is sorely needed in Big D to help fix that situation...open up the bank Mr Jones!!!!

Leehouse: first of all, great pic! and i'm not a Red Sox fan...lol

the Jets can finally get it right by hiring Shanahan because a coach of this stature doesn't come along very often. As for Spagnulo, if I were him I'd enjoy being 1 of the best D coordinators and wait for Coughlin to retire...or get fired.
Succesful coordinators who jumped at a head coaching positions has its up and down...Tomlin worked out in pittsburgh, but what about Cornell and Weiss when they left NE for their head coaching positions?

I am suprised that Jones hasn't fired Phillips since Shanahan was fired. Obviously, Jerry & Wade have a great relationship...a relationship that I wouldn't want Shanahan to experience and I really don't even like Shanahan.
I just don't want him to go to Dallas and fix that locker room. I love the turmoil in the Big D!
