Toomer's Giants future uncertain

Amani Toomer has been playing the game for a long time, and he wants to continue playing it. This is his first time playing the game, though. The negotiating game. The dance where he tries to get what he wants. And the end zone of this route is a new contract, not a touchdown. Maybe that's why Toomer halfheartedly doubted his strategy Wednesday. "I don't know," he said. "Maybe I should have held out in minicamp." But as the calendar resets itself Thursday, Toomer doesn't know if he'll be back with the Giants after this latest postseason run is finished. Toomer is an unrestricted free agent at the conclusion of the season, and although he has said he would like to finish his career with the Giants, he also understands that there's a chance it won't happen.

i dont think the g-men need to re-sign him. im sure he's going to want a decent piece of change and for an aging WR w/ under 600 receiving yds and only 4 tds. plax has been out plenty of games this year so his numbers should be better than this. they have some young WR's in hixon and of course Mario Manningham. dont tie up money in toomer, let him walk, the offense is predicated on the run anyway and they still havent decided on plax so he could most certainly be back next yr as well

toomer at least has a solid head on his shoulders for veteran leadership. would probably require toomer to accept a league minimum deal to stay in NY, but the Giants know Toomer won't be a distraction.

As much as I'd like to see Toomer back with the Giants next year. I'm not sure it will happen given his age and the amount of talent with this team's wide receiving core. Not to mention the other players who would need to be re-signed (Is it Ward and Jacobs?) The only way I see it is if the Giants wait out the verdict of the Plax court hearing and if he's guilty and gone for a while, maybe the Giants could drop him and use the money to re-sign Toomer. He's been a classy player who has done nothing more than give his all for this franchise. I would, as well as management would love to have him finish his career here in NY.

And they couldn't find a picture of Toomer?

January 2, 2009  08:45 AM ET

very underated player going to miss him in the nfl when he is gone

A truly class act and a great Giant, but all things come to an end. He makes too much to keep now he is a possession receiver. Moss, Manningham, you have to find them a spot..He will play next year though somewhere. This is the first time in his career his contract has run out, tellls you all you need to know on what the Giants are thinking.

AI love how this post is on Amani Toomer , yet they have a picture of Eli. Probably because 98% of us would not recognize Amani even if you put his picture up. What a slap in the face...haha

Even though he is really getting up there in age, I would love it for Toomer to part ways with the Giants. As long as I can remember he has always been the Andrew Jackson of the NFL...a Redskins killer.

We're going to need Toomer next year thanks to Plax. Manningham and Moss aren't going to get it done. Only way to NOT sign him is to get Anquan Boldin or Andre Johnson. Def one year, vet minimum. And what is the deal with the Eli Manning pic???

January 2, 2009  04:03 PM ET

I wish this debate could have waited until February 2nd. I don't want to think about losing Toomer yet.

January 2, 2009  04:22 PM ET

Don't be supprised to see amani back with the gints in 09, He's a high character, savy, veteran that is well liked by the organization.
Just because their not persuing his resigning with great ferver doesn't mean their not interested in resigning him for veteran depth and leadership at the right price.
Amani will have to decide, if he's willing to start over, at this stage in his career or take a little less money and continue to enjoy the familiarity, friendships and comfort that come with playing an entire career for a class organization like the NY Football Giants..... Go Blue !

Plax could very well wind up in jail, moss has been inconsistant and injured, manningham has shown NOTHING ...unless a killer WR falls to us in the draft or FA...don't run Amani out on a rail just yet...the guys a class act.

Just Catch Balls and WIN the Championship!!!!!!!!!!!!! worry about that afterwards when the season is OVER

January 2, 2009  09:19 PM ET

Sorry to say but mabe now the giants can now drop both Burris and Tommers contracts and get a real # 1 reciever like bolden or some1. Plax was always overated and hyped up cause of his hieght and what he did against the packers in last year playoffs. Yea he's a huge target but still drops alot of balls and is obviously a pain in the **** for all the trouble that wanna be gangsta brings. drop them both and get some real recievers. Love Tommer but he's washed up and this is business. Mark my words, if the G-men ever get some real options at wide reciever Eli will tear it up next year.

It's time the Giants moved back to New Jersey. Permanently.
